If we lose Amtrak, Bush might as well legalize drunk driving and the use of drugs by truckdrivers, since that is the kind of logic behind his efforts to destroy Amtrak. Perhaps another attack on the airlines would not be such a bad thing. As transport policy, Bush did not get the message on 9/11, perhaps we need another attack on the airlines to drive the message through. I, myself have been trying to pursuade the guy that we need the passenger trains, but if it takes another 9/11 type attack on the air lines, so be it. Some airlines DO deserve to be put out of business.

Appreciate your update.

Says something about the accuracy of some of the posts on this topic, doesn't it?

Do you suppose the November 1 date might be correct, but nobody got the correct year?

When Mr. Gunn decides to leave Amtrak, here is the sequence of people who will be in the know.

1. Mr. Gunn, himself

2. Members of his family and perhaps close personal associates

3. The Amtrak Board of Directors

4. Amtrak employees and the rest of the world.

I am not too concerned that I will someday be picking black feathers out of my teeth on this.

So far, as of Nov. 10th, no employee news has been posted concerning President Gunn - the only thing we know is what we have read on this web site.

If the shutdown included all the affiliated commuter rail operations that are inter-linked with Amtrak contractually, that would definitely have an impact. Actually, sometime in the past wasn't there was a strike or some other labor action that stopped some of the trains, but I don't recall if that was "Amtrak only". And, I think it was before 9/11, when you could "walk up" to buy an airplane ticket w/o going through lengthy security screenings.

I can't see how a shutdown could avoid including NJT, MN, MBTA and others that operate over Amtrak dispatched and or owned lines.

[font=Times New Roman]During the past week of Nov. 5th, Amtrak's Pres. Gunn was in Florida to present Amtrak's annual Presidential Awards to employees. Lets see what the next days ahead will bring (along with the next 4 years with Pres. Bush)! The interesting thing here is, I found out more info about Amtrak on this web site long before we're "officially" told at work (i.e. the roadrailers` demise). The "buzz" at work about Pres. Gunn's possible departure is news to us with this info gained from this web site! Another web site supporting this "rumour" was found with the same info about Pres. Gunn and was posted on Oct. 23rd.

I can't really blame Mr. Gunn for wanting to depart and return to his prior retirement, instead of having to deal with the constant headache of under funding by the gov't., etc. We like the way he has stood his ground with the funding issue - support the system which you, the gov't., had created, or, shut it down.

We've always said amongst ourselves (the pawns on the Amtrak Chess board) that this railroad should go ahead and shut down during the week and let the public, and, the gov't. see what the northeast would look like (a parking lot on I-95 from Washington DC to New York).

I know most of the country wouldn't see much of an impact from this action, but, the rest of the country should think about the impact when all of those "northeasterners" are now consuming more gasoline each year without their train service being available.

A passenger railroad is a form of public transportation, such as a subway and a bus system are, and, the passenger railroad should be funded properly. In turn, the passenger trains help to reduce the impact of the thousands of cars and additional buses that would be placed onto the highways creating more traffic congestion and pollution. And, again, there's the annual fuel savings by not having these additional vehicles on the roads - which in turn reduces our need for Arab OPEC oil.

the way you guys are trumpeting the amtrak presidency of david gunn he must be the greatest thing since sliced bread. he must have learned a lot since he was president of the NYC transit authority many years ago. he did nothing there but agitate the workers and try to bust the union. he did nothing to increase productivity and the managers he brought with him knew nothing about running a transit system. they led by confrontation, intimidation and excessive dicipline and trying to circumvent the civil service laws. one manager known as bullwhip davis had several lawsuits piled up against him by employees that the stress on him caused (possibly ) a fatal heart attack. gunn left the nycta and thing got somewhat better. if he is now doing a good job at amtrak and the employees like him maybe he should stay.

Hopefully, the National Defense issue will be raised and Gunn will get all the money he asks for and needs.

ralphm- Can't find a tongue in cheek smilie which may have made the intent of my post a little clearer.

I think more often the opposit is true. People will believe anything they read on the net. The speculation that Dave Gunn would be leaving Amtrak on November 1 was bounced around on another railroad forum sometime back. Members there concluded that the rumor was without any merit.

What I love about the Internet is that if somone doesn't see what the expect to see, the first conclusion they draw is that there is a conspiracy (sp) to hush it up-- ref: above post.

As of today, November 2, there is no report in any media that Mr. Gunn has left Amtrak.

Is Amtrak keeping this a secret?

How's that for a new rumor?

if they just gave Amtrak the 1.2 billion...the difference would be phenomenal in terms of cars and service. If only, if only...but if his last day ISN'T the 2nd or whenever, I will be slightly offended if I've been duped.

Nothing has been published about David Gunn's leaving Amtrak either in the Washington Post or on Amtrak's web site so far. If this story were true you would have certainly seen something published in both media much earlier than just a few days before the event. I will also believe it when I read it.

(Hide in bunker, wait until shooting stops[;)]).

Naw, he'll still be a senator from the People's Republic of Massachusetts.

SO, let me get this perfectly straight... I get to laugh at you when he is elected right?

You can laugh right now if you want to. Regardless, win or lose, Kerry will not be out of work. Besides, even if he loses and then quits the Senate, he has that ketchup fortune to fall back on.
