Sad really, when even a public safety officer goes around running through crossing guards. Wonder if he will be cited?
As I understand it, he didn't "run around" the gates, he ran through them because he was looking at his in-car computer screen... "Distracted Driving", akin to "Texting while driving".

Semper Vaporo I guess I saw an implication that it was an "intentional bypassing" the gates and not an inadvertent crashing through the gates due to inattention to the duties of driving.

The City police here have an interlock that will not allow computer input if the cruiser is moving more than 5 mph.
In a way this event reminds me of the incident where an oil tanker got broadsided sitting at a grade crossing at night.
I believe that the popular opinion at that time was that the driver was definitely an idiot for driving too fast for conditions (visibility in that incident) whereas the driver in this incident was driving too fast for conditions (inattentiveness this time) as well.
In any event I think we can all agree that any motorist who hits a train is an idiot?

You don't have to input to a computer to be distracted by it. Just trying to read it is more than enough.
