Well if New Starts could buy used from Chicago or Metro North who has a whole junk yard in croton-harmon they could save some bucks. The cost here in Ohio is right of way from the stingy class ones

An excellent cost analysis of passenger train operations can be downloaded from the Colorado Railcar's DMU site at

www.coloradorailcar.com

Some example statistics:
Fuel consumption (1 engine - 6 cars) 2.5 gal per mile
Overhaul and Maintenance costs $10.39 per mile
Crew cost $3.75 per mile
To that you still need to add equipment depreciation based on a purchase cost of about $14 million per trainset.

A diesel road engine burns about 4 gal per mile and its going for about $1.50-$1.75 a gallon. A train service employee makes about $130-180 for a basic day (plus bennies) depending on craft and the particulars of their agreement.

What costs are the 6-12 maintenance employess, 2 dispactching personnel, 6 other support people and the $$$$$ to support the right of way, maintain the cars and engines so you have a RR to run on at passenger train speeds.

Yea mabe that's true. Just like it costs $ 40 to fly from Philly to Atlanta, and it costs $300 coach on Amtrak's Cresent to get to Atlanta from Philly. I wish it were the other way around.
