TURNTABLES
Posted by CHESSIEMIKE on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 10:38 AM
A reply to the Big Boy question stated that turntables are only being used in museums. We know that is not right so let's start a list of railroads that still use them and where they are.
In Baltimore MD CSX & MARC use one at Riverside service area. I think the one in Brunswick is still being used all though the round house is gone. NS still uses the one at Lamberts Point and at Shafers Crossing. I think tho ones in Hinton WV and Richmond VA are still in use, but correct me if I am wrong.

Alias, the turntable in Hinton, WV has been gone for a good many years now. The NPS tends to be willing to spend barrels of $$$ on perserving almost anything *except* historic RR structures, largely because the Park Service tends to want to "protect" the public from the "dangers" of railroads and the historic structures that are near the RR's.

I am not sure which turntable you are referring to in Richmond, VA. We have yards here for three railroads; CSX (former Chessie) out on Williamsburg Road, NS South of the river downtown, and CSX (former RF&P) in the west part of town at Acca Yard. The only turntable I have looked at recently in Richmond is off Williamsburg Road and I don't think it is in use anymore.

Having said all that, I know there is one at the Amtrak station in Lorton (I think) up in northern Virginia. US Rte I-95 was being widened near there in the 1990s and there were two bridges over one leg of a wye track they used to turn equipment there. The highway department determined it would cost less to build a turntable for the railroad there and take out the wye so they could avoid widening the bridges when they widened the interstate. That turntable was completed in the mid 1990s and I believe it is still in use today.

It will be interesting to see how many we get reports of that still operate. - Ed

The New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, has turntable. It's the only one in New Orleans, and
located at their cotton wharehouse yard, just off Napolean & tchopitalous streets in uptown N.O.
It's pretty well concealed by the roundhouse, both of which are still in everyday use.I,m working on a article about the NOPB,if it's published a photo
of the turntable will be included.
