I seem to recall alot of music videos that used trains/ railroad facilities either in the video or as a back drop. Here's a few I remember. Night Ranger in the video for Don't Tell Me You Love Me(IIRC) Rod Stewart Young Turks it was filmed on and around a bunch of stored gons and I'm drawing blanks on a few others.

You would like to think so, but I doubt it. I really like that video for its' RR images obviously, but I also like the scene with the Cattle Liner turning at 2:55. My late uncle used to drive those, way back. Like with a 1952 cab over GMC. And with a trailer maybe 2/3 as big.

I love the song fly over states! however, he sings about a santa fe but shows a soo line. I am pretty sure a non-rail fan wouldnt have caught that:)

Unfortunately, I'm not good with tittles, but one Bryan Adams video has him playing a guitar in front of the now demolished Alberta Wheat Pool elevator at Balzac, north of Calgary on CP's Calgary-Edmonton line.
There are a number of shots of the still extant former CN roundhouse at Hanna, AB, on CN's Calgary-Saskatoon,SK line, in a Nickleback video.

My understanding is that John Mellencamp was born and raised in Seymour, IN. All the railroad shots used were from the Seymour area. At Seymour the PRR Chicago to Louisville route crosses the B&O Cincinnati to St. Louis line at grade. The black engine was in Penn Central paint - it appeared to be a single engine train, most likely a local, and depending on where it was in it's trip was likely to be operated with either long or short hoods forward. Except for the pan shot of the Chessie engine led train, all the other shots seem to have been taken in the vicinity of JO Tower, which was staffed by a PRR (and successors) Operator and controlled the railroad crossing at grade between the lines. JO Tower is visible in 2 of the 4 railroad shots in this video.

I know this dosen't answer the question, but Jasen Aldean's song "Flyover Country" mentions sante Fe railroad. his song "Dirt Road Anthem' has a shot of a yard full of covered hoppers. Wonder if he's a railfan/modeler?

Well, since the OP brought up mid-1980s Chessie System action, REM's Driver 8 has about as much Chessie railroad switching action as you can find this side of a railfan video. Bonus imagery of what looks like a GE getting a ride on a turntable.
