Pure "sandhouse gossip" for now. Rumor came about when BNSF and CN proposed to merge. STB changed the rules over that!

Don't hold your breath! I don't see the STB allowing it any time soon. UP just got over their indigestion and probationary period after swallowing the SP.

Hi,
It has been a rumour around for a while, and they do co-ordinate a lot of traffic, but don't look for anything soon. The STB likely wouldn't allow it, and their new rules make it extremely difficult to pull off a merger of that size now. Instead look for more alliances and partnerships, which is the route UP is taking at this time anyway. These partnerships are serving them well at this time like, the express lane with CSX, the auto business with NS, and the partnership with CP in Idaho.

Union Pacific will not merge with anybody now. UP is lobbying in Washington against any railroad mergers. UP would lose business if the mergers occured. BNSF would be the railroad to attempt mergers, but this move will be delayed for a while.
Best guess for now on the future mergers would be BNSF-CN-NS.,, and UP-CSX-CP.

MY Guess for the future would also be UP-CSX-CP. After all UP Hands off trains to CSX Like the Car Loads of Carrots and UP Hands off GM Traffic to The CP.

I think that was just made up by the UP when the BNSF-CN merger was discussed. The UP wants to be the biggest. It took less than a year for them to overcome BNSF when they bought SP, and they choked on it financialy just to try and be even. I think there will eventualy be two competing railroads, composed of the following: BNSF-CSX-CN and UP-NS-CP.
