Thats quite a description right there albeit a little confusing. Also Q405 & Q406 carry the [orange] trash NOT Q439 albeit i have seen some trash cars (green like 703) & 439 & 438 but its usually 1 or 2 cars. Also the traffic was for SC & 703 terminates in Collier VA not Florence SC.............

Two things about the operation of any particular scheduled train on a railroad.

Traffic patterns change, customers are always looking for a lower cost option or a more compatible service to handle their transportation needs - this applies to both the carriers that move the freight and the receivers of the freight.  These options are continually evaluated by all the parties concerned.

The carriers, in handling a specific movement of freight are always searching for a more effective way to handle the freight within their network - this includes the jobs that get the freight from the shipper, the trains that handle the freight between the originating yard and destination yard, and the trains that service the consignee from the destination yard.  Timing is a element in all these services.  Most shippers don't want train crews in their facility when they are trying to load their commodity; they want the carrier to show up after they have completed the loading operation.  Consignees want the shipment in place when their workforce comes on duty to unload the shipment.  The carriers scheduling attempts to work between these two customer requirements, in addition to matching train size and blocking requirements through the network.

With the above paragraph having been stated; the carrier may switch handling of a block of traffic between different trains on their network from time to time as it best fits needs.  While I have no idea what has happened to the trash that was being handled on Q409, trash is being handled on both Q405 and Q439 South of Philadelphia as well as Q703 - the all trash train.  It is highly likely, that any trash arriving Selkirk destined to the South Carolina destination are being put on Q703 rather than Q409 which also originates at Selkirk.

Just as an aside. To M.C.'s post:  Recently between Mulvane and Wellington (KANSAS) I've noticed westbound cuts of what appear to be newly painted containers (Dark Grey painted) on flats in cuts of six to eight cars (carrying 6 containers each).

Had not seen them before the last several weeks.  Did not get close to see marking on cars, and containers appeared to have no lettering.

Joe: a good number of the Epic cars go to Grote, CO (Carlton on US-50 to the highway people, between Holly and Lamar in SE Colorado on the BNSF La Junta Sub) where they are unloaded and spread in the onion, cantalope and vegetable fields along the Arkansas river.

Some of it was stored in old corrugated grain elevators until the methane and dust bin explosions got out of hand and the agri-dummies found out they were responsible for clean-up. The roof of the elevator at Amity was blown about 200 yards away from the elevator after the dried sludge s**t pellets blew up during transfer from the bins to trucks..

Good idea but I don't think that's the case......The trash im talking about was carried in flatcars that 4 40' containers grey or orange.....The orange cars come sometimes but the grey cars just seem to have disappeared......Could they have gotten scrapped?.....Also the trash was for a landfill in SC.........

I thought that Virginia was importing NYC trash on CSX.  There was a story in the Washington Post some time ago about it.  Virginia evidently has enough current landfill space for 300 years, so they make quite a bit of coin importing trash by rail.

I really don't know for sure, but think that is the case. It seems every time I have passed the yard recently, there is always trash coming in on CSX or leaving on SCRF

SCRF usually gets a load of trash at Florence to deliver to the big Landfill at Bishopville, SC. HTH

CSX Freight Trains Q409 & Q410...No Trash..WHY?!?!?!
Posted by richardcw44ac5106 on Saturday, November 12, 2011 5:52 PM

Ok guys i have a little question that has been in my mind a lot now...lately ive been seeing and hearing that CSX Q409 & Q410 (Selkirk NY - Waycross GA same for 410 but NB) has been coming without the long cut of trash cars it usually has upfront usually behind the power same for 410 but @ the rear...Why has it been coming without. trash, does it have anything to do wit this crappy economy?...do they do this mess on purpose or wat?...does the place where the trash was picked up from shut down or go out of business????...its annoying as hell when it without it...i think that Q405 & Q406 have never come without their cut of orange "DSEX" flatcars...maybe sometimes but I think its rare for them too come without trash..also a question out of curiosity...Where does Q409 pick the trash up???...any replies would be appreciated....and does the trash ever make its way to Waycross GA or does it get dropped off at Florence Yard for SCRF???....thanks in advance!......
