Carolina & North-Western abandonment date?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 9, 2004 2:58 PM
My favorite railroad is the original Carolina & North-Western that ran from Chester, SC to Edgemont, NC. I pretty much know the history of the railroad like the back of my hand, but one piece of the puzzle I can't find is when the track was removed between Maiden, NC and Dallas (Gebo), NC.

Can anyone help me with this information?

Also, does anyone know what is going to happen to the Gastonia to Gebo section that was abandoned earlier this year?

Between Maiden and Lincolnton i think around 1985. Between Lincolnton and Dallas around 1979.Gastonia to Dallas the town of Dallas woants to keep it in place the highway dept woants it at Interstate 85 so they can build new exit ramps the track is in the way.Gastonia to the CBP plant south hauls latex and scrap metal the CBP ships out about a tank car every 3 months the Ti Caro old warehouse sometimes gets boxcars.State Line scrap might get a spur i dont think they will.

Look at the STB website under Norfolk Southern for the Gebo to Gaston section under AB-290-240(x).....Look at filings 33945, 33946 and 33950 in the STB records....Think it became a city-county trail unless North Carolina RR still exists somehow and is operating under the railroad radar screen.

Before 1996, but after 1975, the STB has microfiche copies of the procedeings at their office in Washington. Call the librarian at STB for copies...

[:D]Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I live beside the old right of way in Lincolnton, and that's something I never could get a solid answer about.

Also, I would like to see something done with the old C&N-W depot downtown, right now there's a man living in it and uses the warehouse to work on junk cars. The depot and the caboose out front are pretty much falling in on themselves. Unless somebody gets them and starts restoring them, they're not long for this world.[:(] I had thought about starting an initiative myself, but I don't know if I have the time or the resources to be successful.
