Amtrak Operating Personnel...Engineer & Conductor and their Assistants, are all bound by the Hours of Service Law and Amtrak Trains do have occaision to exceed the allowed 12 hours on duty and thus Amtrak must supply a Dogcatcher crew to continue the trains movement.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Passengerfan is correct. Under Amtrak the entire onboard service crew (dining car staff, lounge attendants, car attendants) stay onboard for the entire trip in a crew dorm. The Engineer, Assistant Engineer, Conductor and Assistant Conductors all change at different crew changes depending upon their particular labor agreement.

The Dining car crew traveled with the train and used the crew Dormitory. The Conductor, and Brakemen changed as did the engineers. The car attendants also traveled with the train. Hope this answers your questions. In pre-amtrak days many passenger trains had two conductors the train conductor and a Pullman conductor. The latter traveled with the train and was responsible for the Pullman cars in the train but still answered to the train conductor.

Lets pick a random train..............the Crescent New York to New Orleans. That train crew members like the conductors and dining car people that starts on the train in new york do they stay on the train on the whole trip or do they get off and another crew replaces them and does this crew work all across the Amtrak system or do they only serve on that train?
