How much does he drink??
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 27, 2004 12:00 AM
At the risk of sounding ridiculous due to the lack of technical knowledge and experience, I always want to know how much a typical locomotive fuel consumption rate is. Could anyone give me an example of a particular model you know please? Is it possible that only one fill up of every loco in the consist can take the whole, for example 100 load double stack, train across the country?? Thank you very much.

Oh man. I can't remember which thread discussed the "fuel" issue. It was maybe 3 or 4 months ago. Mr. Hemphill himself added many comments and it was a very good thread. I just can't remember which thread it was. [:(] [V] [B)]

No, one tank won't get you across the country. Different units have different fuel tank sizes, but many are in the 3,000 gal range as I recall. Locos burn a lot of fuel. Can't remember how much, but it varies by throttle notch. We always get these fuel saving notices and programs, but I can't lay my hands on one now.

Newer units hold 5,000 gal older units around 3,000 depending on amountof cars tonnage , and units used . to round it off with out getting into all the variables anywhere between 1/2 to 1 1/2 miles to the gallon.
