Boston to Search Train Commuters

Ah, yes. Another example of lets-make-some-impressive-gestures-at-security-so-the-public-will-think-we-are-protecting-them.

Here is a link to the USA Today article:

I have some "security" ideas of my own. However, I am sure the ACLU wouldn't like them either. My ideas involve common sense, something the ACLU surely hates. Just a few things like protecting our borders. You know if it smells like a fish and looks like a fish, then it most likely is a fish. Hook them now, get the fishing license later.

Playing devils advocate here, but ...
Ok, I'll bite.
How do you protect our borders?
And, due to my geographical location, lets use the Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, California borders as the textbook example....

Now, if we can't keep the drug smugglers, and the illegal ailens out, how do we "protect the borders?"

Dan will vouch for this..
There are places out there where you can effectivly hide an entire squad of aircraft, even from the overheads, if you know what you are doing.

Almost every day, the local news carries stories about illegals found wandering, or dieing, in the desert.
U.S.Border Patrol estimates for every single one they find out there, at least 10 made it safely across.

Not trying to be a smart aleck, but how?

To borrow the punch line from a story about speeding tickets:

"Did you ever catch ALL the fish?"

We don't catch 'em all, and never will. But the fact that there are illegals wandering around the desert means that they had to sneak in, not just stride across the border. The fact that they catch 1 in 10 means that only 9 of 10 are still on the loose. That doesn't sound real impressive, unless the 1 they caught would have robbed your house, or whatever.

On the other hand, this doesn't mean we should have to give up rights, etc. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, not unreasonable search and seizure.

I am not for unreasonable search and seizure. But we can patrol the borders more than is done now. There was an article a while back about the Park Rangers not being able to patrol the national parks because of a shortage of manpower. The national parks have become unsafe at night and the Park Rangers lack the ability to protect campers there. The article made it sound like guns, drugs, illegal aliens, and violence were commonplace. There is strength in numbers but right now the "numbers" are for law and disorder. I am not trying to spread gloom and doom but we must protect our borders much better or face another cowardly attack. The world has become not only crazy "over there" but is getting that way here. The time to do better is now, not tomorrow. It can be done with electronic sensors to monitor an area and if triggered then police or military could be dispatched quickly by helicopter and or 4 wheel drive vehicles. Where would we get the manpower and money? We have people out of work all over the country. And we certainly could stop sending so much of our money overseas and invest it here in our own security. If we can put a man on the moon, we can protect our borders better. That is IF we really wanted to.
