I have access to rosters in just about every division of UP and more. Not hard to get. And work rules on different divisions vary, so what may be true in your little corner of the world, may not be in the rest of the country. Any rail should know that. I am sure we have more furloughed employees than your line has total employees. Not that it means a whole lot, but considering percentages and relationships to statements, it does.
Murray How dare you have the impudence to claim how trains are run when you are not even a railroader!
How dare you have the impudence to claim how trains are run when you are not even a railroader!
Hey Murray, are you a railroader?
IT works like this, Henry. When you work for a railroad, you have access to a lot of information. Information including, but not limited to, rosters for those holding engineer's cards.
I kind of keep track of that list, so I know how far away I am from those spots. They actually just promoted some more people, so that means fewer certified engineers "stepped down". Now we don't have flowback, either, while other roads do. So that can play with the numbers as well.
One lesson in all of this: you CAN NOT make generalizations about railroads as a whole based on one small division or road. Every road, every location is different. That is where you erred. It's no big deal, honest... we all err. Just don't get all upset because someone called you out on it. I've made generalizations on here before that were not correct. But I don't get all ticked off about it. It's how we learn.
PS, and yes, it is a B.F.D. This is my job and career for now. So, yeah, things like rosters are pretty important to us.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any

Knock yourself out hotshot.
henry6Well you and Mr. Murray are just as wrong in your assumptions that I am lying. Intimating that I am lying and being decietful and asking me to retract the statements as if you are the only ones that are right is wronng on your part. I have made my supporting statement as one of you brain surgeons requested and you still slam me....
You're a real piece of work Pal.
henry6Yeah, you "called me out", not inquired as to why I might say that. And you have access to current rosters for those holding engineer licenses on my division. Do you?" shows an arrogant and argumentative posturing. BFD buddy!

For Bingo? I can get them, pretty easy - just have to find the codes in my book.
NYSW? No, but then again... we are talking nation-wide. Using one small geographical area is not a good representation.
Yeah, you "called me out", not inquired as to why I might say that. Calling me out is why I didn't feel I had to respond.
RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

Yeah, what do I know. I only work here. And nor did I ever imply you were wrong or lying, I cautioned your use of a general term when you only have experience in a limited area. Sorry, but BINGO crews and Sus-Q crews are not a fair representation of RRers nation-wide. I think we can all agree upon that.
You use NS as an example. On NS, there is no bid system for engineers. It works on a straight seniority system (for post-85ers). So some terminals may have lots of hoggers if people stay around, while other terminals barely have any stepped down engineers as they are horrible places to work and the people move out as fast as they can.
henry6Prove that I am wrong...
Prove that I am wrong...
Actually, I called you out on that first (from page 2, 2:41pm) , but you provided no proof. I have access to current rosters for those holding engineer licenses on my division. Do you?
henry6In the territories near Bingahmton on NS and CP and NYSW this is true. Maybe your railroad doesn't have that many dual qualified people, but that's the way it is around here. Sorry. I am right and you are wrong to attack me in this manner.

First, I didn't attack you Henry. Second, I said be careful making statements like "most" conductors have their hogger card. While in your piece of the RR world it may be true, there's lots of places that it isn't. So you are still not 100% right.
Murray BucyrusYes there does seem to be a little inconsistency in the moderator department these days. There is no need for you to make derogatory comments about the moderator. Henry6 made a statement...clearly incorrect...and one in which he needs to support or retract. Simple.

If you drink too much crabjuice, then you will have to use the onboard facilities (or offboard weeds)...
Mt Dew? Ewww, awww, gross. I'll take a crabjuice.

RRKenAs far as the rest? I point you to Reader's Digest from the 50's and 60's; "Laughter is the best Medicine" column. We already have enough stress and worries from life, who needs it in our advocations as well?
Some foamers have no sense of humor Ken.
henry6 Zug and Murray...your accussations are unwarrented....and I resent the implications and tones. In fact this whole thread has fallen into childish scribblling and I hope the moderator sees fit to close down...he's done it for less reason..

Why, because you don't like them Hank? Fact is, you made the reference that so many conductors are dual qualified. Even at full employment, that is not the case. There are a lot of guys who choose not to take the bid on engineer school because it would keep them forced away from 'home'.
In larger terminals, it is the norm to get your ticket as soon as possible, so as not to loose seniority. But in a place with no more than 33 men, who cares so long as you are not forced every few months to a terminal far from home. We like sleeping in our own beds.
