You mean UP acctually washes it's locos??? Coulda Fooled me!!

But in all seriousness i understand the reason for painting all of UP's locos the same yellow from the snazzy(sp?) schemes of the fallen flags that it aquired, BUT they could have left them basically the same but put some sort of markings on them to say that they belong to UP while still leaving the cool paint jobs like the DRG&W and the SP Boody nose. Granted there are a few more SP bloody nose locos mixed in with the UP bunch but after a while it will be gone and forgotten.
They need to do what BNSF did with the SF warbonnets Instead of painting them the Orange and Green the left the warbonnet and just canged the lettering on the side form Santa Fe to BNSF.. It still liike magnificent even though it is missing the SF name.

Just my $0.02

As far as automotive type paints, red is the most expensive color you can buy, white is cheapest. The rest of the colors fall somewhere in between. Not sure of the exact reasons, but that's how it is. In fact, back in the early 90's, when I was pricing some paint for a car, in one particular line, red was twice the price of white. The paints used for locomotives would be of similar makeup as automotive. Originally laquer, but more likely now acrylics.

Personaly, I like the UP "Flag Units", NS "Horse Head", and the CSX "Dark Future". They all are pretty good. One company who had to change their scheme was New Jersey Transit. Luckly they changed it...YAY[:)][:)][:)][:)]

I like the NS Black and White and the UP Armor Yellow/Harbor Mist Gray. I don't really mind colors as long as the design itself is okay.

After living in Norfolk for almost 15 years off-and-on and seeing the coal trains every day, I really like the NS black paint scheme. Sure, some folks say it's because black paint is cheaper (really? I thought the cost of paint had to do with its protective and weatherproofing qualities, not color), but black and white is also cleverly simple, which goes back on Eads's philosophy of "Less is more." Nobody faulted Johnny Cash for wearing black. Maybe UP should paint their Challenger in UP yellow (Ugly puke?), just so those people who don't like black won't have to complain about the color of that locomotive..

The Union Pacific has the nices paint in current railroading. Also Norfolk Southern is good. They should paint in Southern Green and Norfolk and Western Maroon and gold.

I don't see UP changing anytime soon, it is a historical image an nobody else seems to care. I loved the old Mo-pac blue but it was only a matter of time untill it was all washed in the blood of yellow. LONG LIVE THE MOP!!!

Western Pacific had a sharp-looking paint job with the orange and silver (or is it aluminum?) it applied to its locomotives in the 1960s, and earlier. WP's Perlman green and orange?.......[xx(]
I like UP's color scheme for its diesels. The yellow and grey colors have stood the test of time very well. If anything maybe NS could add a white lightning stripe to the sides of their locomotives to liven up things. Fat chance of that happening, as NS, like other railroads, has to watch the bottom line, and keep costs to a minimum.

I like the UP scheme and think their early articulated streamliners were some of the best looking trains ever built. Of course I liked the Zephyrs too. And the Electroliner. Dave

If UP or NS or any other railroad is going to change their paint scheme they should do something patrioctic. I think it should more like designs from the 70 during the bicentenial rather than just a flag that UP applied on the side of it's SD-70s.
