External differences on locomotives
Posted by Noah Hofrichter on Thursday, May 27, 2004 4:14 PM
Okay I have a couple of questions.

What are the main external differences of GP38 and GP35 locomotives.

What are the main external differences of SW1200 and SW1500 switchers?

And the main external differences of SD20's and SD24's?

I mean mainly big things, not little tiny details, but any thing is apreciated.

A GP38 has 2 radiator fans, a GP35 has 2 fans sandwiching a smaller fan.

An SW1200 doesn't have full radiator grills on the roof.

An SD20 is a rebuild from an SD24 and has an SD40 style nose and cab

Look at the end of the long hood.A GP 35 has three fans, two large fans with a small fan in the middle.A GP38 has two fans of equal size.
An SW 1200 has a rounded cab roof. An SW1500 has a roof that is flat in the middle and angled down at each side as viewed from the rear.Hope this helps!

Thanks both of you. That makes alot of sense now that I think about it. On an SW1200 aren't the number boards on the top of the "long hood", instead of on the front like in an SW1500, or is it the other way around, or are they both the same?
