There can be no good coming from this. At least the wreck reconstruction program is up and running, so there may be a few replacements in the pipeline for the peak summer season. Rumor has it that at least 7 cars were turned on to the sides. As with any derailment, this is quite unfortunate. My condolences go out to the rails and the passengers who experienced this. [V][:(]

By JOEDY McCRARY, Associated Press Writer

YAZOO CITY, Miss. - An Amtrak train derailed in rural central Mississippi late Tuesday, killing at least one person on board and injuring dozens.

"We have one confirmed dead and we've got possibly 80 injured," said Amy Carruth, a spokeswoman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency in Jackson. "We understand some of the injured are possibly critical."

Meanwhile, Gov. Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency and said in a statement that rescuers on the scene believed the number of injured could be as high as 90.

At least one Jackson hospital reportedly received a number of the injured but officials declined to release details.

Dan Stessel, a spokesman for Amtrak, said nine of the train's cars left the tracks about 25 miles north of Jackson and toppled onto their sides. He said the train's manifest showed 72 passengers and 12 crew members.

Carruth said her agency "was sending every resource we can get out hands on out there. ... At last report we've still got people trapped."

Besides search teams, portable lights and other equipment was being rushed to the scene, she said. Red Cross staffers were on hand to assist passengers.

Yazoo County sheriff's dispatcher Mary Whisenton said at least five ambulances had also been sent to the scene.

Stessel said he had no information on what caused the accident.

The train was traveling from New Orleans to Chicago when it left the tracks at about 7 p.m. near the Yazoo-Madison county line, authorities said.

Stessel said the train made several stops after leaving New Orleans about 1:55 p.m., including Jackson. He said the train had a scheduled stop in Yazoo City.

I just heard on CNN (10:18 am EDT) that the FBI has sent agents to the wreck.
I shows how times has change that the FBI is called before the cause of the accident is found. Used to be only after sabatoge was found that the law would be called in.
I guess that it will be the norm from now on.

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.

Wait, please, before assessing blame. The cause is not yet reported. It could be mechanical, track, both, or other. Four derailments in 10 years means nothing in and of itself. Even track and equipment maintained to the highest standard will experience failure. After a cause is determined, and a pattern established, THEN it is fair to comment. Until then, comments on cause and blame will only encourage responsible users to leave this forum. When they leave, answers to questions will disappear with them.

Without statements from the head end crew, and minus what the surfboard and the Feds put out on tomorrow's morning news, the best anyone here could do is guess, and guessing is a very dangerous game.

You bet the FBI is going to send agents, in todays post 9/11 world, the director of the office that handles that area would be unemployeed right quick if he/she didnt.

And not to bust any bubbles, but every hour of every day, somewhere in America, a train is on the ground, be it on a mainline or in a yard, derailments are a daily part of railroading, the only difference is in severity.

There is a reason the old switchers had re-railing frogs on board..

I agree with Mr. Hemphill it is not right to point the finger this quickly...we had car split a brand new switch a few weeks ago at 10 mph.

I generally agree with Mark Hemphill, and as I replied to a similar topic speculating on the cause of the derailment is just that - speculation. However, I disagree with Mark Hemphill in a way. The fact that four derailments occurred on that stretch of track in the past ten years may or may not be significant; it depends on their causes and their severities, and that is for the NTSB to judge.

Her ticket may prevent her family from suing Amtrak, as it may be an automatic acceptance of risk, just like your ticket to the Cub's game.

This section of track occurs in an area that has a very unique type of soil. It is called Yazoo Clay and is only found in the central Mississippi and delta of Mississippi area. It is extremely expansive and cause severe problems for any type of construction in this area. It causes problems for railroad roadbeds, building, highways, etc.. When it is kept in a constant state, either wet or dry, there is no movement. If dry, when it becomes wet, it expands two to three times it's original size. When wet, and it dries out, it shrinks. We have had a period of about three weeks of no rain, so this may be one of the problems associated with that stretch of track.

Latest from the media is that the engineer saw some sort of misalignment in the track and applied the brakes, then saw the right rail roll out. He then went into emergency. All of this happened in twenty seconds. Hats off to the quick action of the engineer.

Track has reopened and had both the north and south bound City of New Orleans through yesterday. Still under slow order until cars are removed. Some of the freight traffic has been rerouted on the other North/South line (Grenada District).

Sympathy to the family who lost a loved one.
