FOFLMAO....

"Low Mileage F40s" is an oxymoron. These are former Amtrak units that have been run until not much was left. I'm sure they have been maintained, and perhaps these units have fewer mileage than some F40s, but that isn't saying a whole lot...

Well lets see, our forum railroad already has 2 F units and a combination of the CN train and the BC Wine train passenger cars. But you know it just wouldn't hurt to add these 4 fillies to our stable just in case we get some more passenger cars. [:D] [;)]

Another one of those marketing words with many meanings. Such work could range from a new paint job to a complete rebuilding. In this case it is probably something in between. If I was a buyer I would be looking to see exactly what was done. Probably correction of some existing issues with the units. Not something that is a long term fix. Usually, if the unit is requalified to original tolerances that term will be used. If it is remanufactured that term would be used. Since I don't see either of those terms I would want complete documentation of issues as received and what specific work the overhauls included.

I took another look at the site. $200,000 is a lot for units without a current blue card. Judging by the dates for the last 92 day inspection of the units at best they have a few days on their cards if out of service credit is available. The last inspections were in 2001 and this assumes that the units weren't robbed for parts to keep others in service.

It also notes that the last heavy overhauls of the units were in 2000 and 2001, presumably by Amtrak. I don't see mention of overhauls after the units were sold to their current owner.

With good GP40-2s available for less than $200,000 I'd be hard pressed to justify the price of these units to a corporate board.

Low mileage- (Lo Mile-adge) 1. Less than 3 million miles. 2. Freshly rebuilt, not too many miles since overhaul.
