Well, since the SP-UP merger the UP has aquired the turntable at the Roseville Loco. shop. It is still sitting in the old foundation of the roundhouse used for the cab-forwards. And I know from first hand experience that that table gets used several times a day.

Are turntables used as much as they used to be?

I would think with all the loco's running backwards nowadays that turntables really aren't used all that much.....

Are turntables installed in new RR yards, or are they now really just a thinng of the past?

Thanks

They told me that they are a part of history now. Since engines go both ways, not much use for a turntable anymore. Sigh.

Diesels still need to be turned to head the cab in the right direction.

How often will this happen. A wye in the big yards is all what a RR need.

We had both a turntable and a wye. The wye still does all the work and the turntable is so much dust somewhere.

Come East, Young Sis!

We still have a turntable at Proviso, and it's used fairly regularly. A lot less hassle than wyeing the locomotive (which is also a possibility).

I know that Frisco had one in Springfield, Missouri. It was/is next to the loco facility. I don't know if BNSF uses it or not.

There was at least one here in North Little Rock. I have never seen it though and it might have been taken out.

There is still one at Eureka Springs but as far as I know it doesn't operate.

There is/was one at Fort Smith. I saw something about it "somewhere" in the last year or two.

Seems like I read somewhere in Trains once that the Cheyenne turntable was the last on the original UP.
The ex-CNW turntables are still at Council Bluffs, Boone, and Marshalltown. The one at Council Bluffs is at the facility that maintains the business car fleet.
Boone and Marshalltown are still used. In ATC territory sometimes an engine consist will come in with only one engine equipped. If it needs to go back from where it came, it needs to be turned.

I just remember there is a turntable at Tyler, Texas.

There is also a balloon track there. I am not sure about a wye.

When the Cotton Belt 819 ran its steam excursions the engine was turned on the turntable. The turntable was no longer powered and had to be helped manually. The passenger consist was turned on the balloon track.

I once saw the FWWR's turntable @ the Stockyard's Station in Fort Worth, TX being turned by a rope attached to a pickup!! The Ten Wheeler came along for the ride just fine but it was a challenge to line up the tracks!!
