Can anyone enlighten me on how railroads figure/determine/calculate horsepowerhours owed?

Take the locomotive involved and multiply the horsepower rating by the hours on the other RR between interchanges. Charge the other railroad the total for all of your locomotives on their railroad on a monthly basis and you have the basics. RRs do offset amounts owed against one another and the difference sometimes has to be paid in cash. All of this depends upon the agreements between the RRs involved.

Is the price of fuel included in Horse Power Hours?

Or is the company responsible for the fuel of that loco when they are using the loco?

I would assume that with the cost of a fill-up gas cunsumption would be a pretty big deal?

Now that we are in shorts and t shirt weather I am noticing a ton of Norfolk Southern units around here on UP trains. I am also seeing some CSX units too. The other night I noticed some leased units.

Is there a power shortage again?

Does every railroad have a power shortage now?

It seems like every railroad is running every other railroads units now. [:p]

Are we having that many run throughs these days or what? [?] [?] [?]

Saw another bunch of CN, CP, CSX, NS, FURX, and MRL while on vacation over spring break

I drove past three trains passing each other today on a CSX line.

The one headed south had a 2 CSX engines.

The first headed north had 1 CSX, 2 UP, and 1 NS.

The second northbound had 2 UP, and 1 CSX.

While I love the variety an all CSX consist has become so rare around here that I have to take a picture![;)]

How does the liability issue work out if let's say a BNSF train on BNSF track derails and two of the locomotives that were damaged were CSX units.

Is the host railroad responsible or is it the "owner railroad"? I've been curious as here in Tampa I've seen locomotives from all the Class 1s, including a Union Pacific SD unit with the American Flag on the sides (Impressive!)
