TAG
The GR&I was Pennsy. It ran all the way from the Mackinaw area to Cincy by way of Grand Rapids, Fort Wayne, and Richmond Indiana. US27 plays tag with it for most of the way. The NYC line was the old Fort Wayne and Jackson. I think it at one time ran down to HUGO from Jucntion as well as you can "see" what looks like a second roadbed west of the existing track. Take a look at this map: http://atlas.ulib.iupui.edu/librarycongress_sid/rr004180.html
Where the GR&I veers slightly west north of Fort Wayne, the NYC (FW&J) veered slighlty to the east.

Speaking of maps you just missed a presentation about this take a look at this message board
http://pub3.bravenet.com/forum/show.php?sernum=246480962&msgid=&mode=&cp=2
and read the threads about the Fort Wayne and Jackson

happy reading

By the way, can I assume from your moniker that you don't care for MicroSavant software?

Yanno, you are RIGHT....Though an easbound turn at the Nickel plate used to be possible by the old knitting mill

Additional comments:

I always thought that GR&I track was New York Central, the logical extension of the line that crosses Wells Street, etc....I guess because that bridge over Main street looks so similar to the one (torn down now) over Sherman Street, I guess now, based upon what I read, there was a change in ownership at Runnion.

You don't y anychnce have an old "route map" of the New York central through Allen County and Ft Wayne, do you? I've walked most of it, so I know full well how to find it, just curious to see birdseye view...

One omission from that guys site is in the "former customers" served for the NYC, That line across Spy Run Blvd (near wagner) used to serve the Ft Wayne waterworks,..part of the track is still there, and I can just BARELY remember cars sitting on that siding...LONNNNG ago

Makes perfect sense, now that I've been lucky enoughy to have it spelled out for[#wstupid] me.

But yanno, only living a good walk away from Hugo, I'd a never guessed. Sure, "Huntington" ison the east-west line, But Chicago just isn't a point of destination for these tracks, especially if you realize the name originates from back in the Wabash era..

Sure, NOW the NewCastle district connects with NS's Chacago District via the Hadley cutoff, and used to connect via Junction, Park, and Runnion, but back in the day, NS's "Chicago District" was a foreign road, the Nickel Plate.

I guess the "go" must be from the link up with the old Pennsey, at "Junction"

Learn something new every day

Made for some good reading though, really took me back.

I remember as a kid, being able to sneek up into the abandoned Hugo tower, and train watch, talk about being on top of the action!!

...Yes, on using letters for tower ID in the east. When visiting in the Johnstown, Pa. area in the not too distant past I would hear the "letter" towers ID after transmitting a message....on my hand held scanner, etc....on Conrail...ex. Pennsylvania.

To you folks west of us that were hit pretty badly by snow and ice....here in central Indiana the sky is rich blue and total sunshine this morning...but it was also "0" upon arising this morning and no wind. Will get to about 20 today. But what weather front we did have has passed on to the east. Good riddance.

The waypoints on the Montreal secondary (CSX, NY) are mostly shortened versions of some landmark, like "River" for Indian River, "Vern" for Gouverneur, "Cona" for Lacona. A couple probably bear some explanation (Kane, Roots), but the rest pretty well make sense.

Here around the MD area, the towers are just named initials or letters, most seemingly w/o a reason: QN, WB, K. I do know WB is for west bound though

Well, here's what I got back:

As to Hugo: A 1918 ICC valuation map listed the location at Hugo correctly or incorrectly as "Hugo, Indiana". But the Wabash apparently had a nack of using acronyms before they were fashionable. Pergo near Montpelier is reportedly combination of Peru and Chicago. Perhaps Hugo is a combination of Huntington and somethint else? Incidentally, my 1897 timetable lists this location as "Muncie Junction". (The north-south line that crossed here was originally the Fort Wayne, Muncie & Cincinatti.)

First of all "Thanks" I really enjoyed flushing out the links, lot of good reading. Neverr thought about "Googling" for Hugo, since it seemed such a relic of the past, silly me.

I learned just about everything there is to know about Hugo, except where the derned name comes from[censored][sigh]

I will try e-mailing the webmaster at the bigger site source of infojust the same, "who knows?" etc.

Ifyou run across it, however, feel free to share

Hey Model car, You are a fountain of railroadiana, let me ask you this, I'v tried all the local sources and come up dry.

Right where the former Nickelplate crosses the former Wabash here in Ft Wayne, on the former's way down into your part of the state is an interlocking and exchange siding that USED to have a manned tower, named "Hugo". The Tower is long gone, but the name persists to this day, denoted by a wayside sign that is obviously maintained by the railroad, stating "Hugo"

Have you any idea or info as to the significance of this name? It certainly has no bearing upon anything in the immediate vicinity, and I'm just curious if you might know.

Based upon my experiances in California, noting that the "Redondo" tower is no where near "Redondo Beach", yet "kinda in that neck of the woods" based upon the direction the passing track heads off to, I'm wondering if "Hugo" might have any significance with any entities down in your area?

....Yesterday we here in central Indiana..[Muncie], really got our first amount of snow that really covered the tops of the grass and made it look like Winter the first time this season. Really just about 2" of it. Then last night, overnight...it gave us a bit more but still in the minor leagues. Clearing is expected tomorrow and the sun is breaking through at times today...A touch of wind with it all. Not like the blizzard we had on this date in 77.

Mookie worked really hard watching the driver snow blow the driveway and sidewalks 4 times.

8 to 11 inches of snow - preceeded by sleet and ice and the delightful street crew that kept plowing in our driveway.

Had to chip the '81 LTD out of ice and snow yesterday - but it started right up - while MIllie huddled in the garage - it was 12 below at 5 am when we started out this morning. Work and school was cancelled yesterday - not a happy camper - you know I wanted to be here!

Hang on everything east of Nebraska - it's coming your way! Lucky You!!!!!
