Third rail extends west from Penn Station to the tunnel portals to support the wire maintenance trains. PRR (and PC) kept a side-rod DD1 from 1910 on the roster until about 1969 strictly for this duty.

As mentioned above, the catenary extends east to the New York Connecting RR and then to the former NH Shore Line to Boston.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Amtrak wire extends from Boston to Washington, DC, and west to Harrisburg. LIRR goes part way out Long Island. Metro-North third rail goes as far north as Brewster, New York.

Hell Gate bridge (see the maps) was an engineering triumph, and made possible through train running through New York from New England -- prior to Hell Gate, the southermost all-rail route from New England south and west went through Poughkeepsie and over the high bridge there (bridge is still there, damaged by fire and unused -- spectacular). The next RR bridge north is between Castleton and Selkirk, just south of Albany. The New Haven RR built Hell Gate and connected through Queens to the Sunnyside yards (still in service) and tunnels under the East River to Penn Station, then tunnels (PRR) under the Hudson to south and west.

Yes. Amtrak & NJT enters Penn from the west - Hudson. LIRR enters from the east. But the electrics are different. Wire for Amtrak and NJT and 3rd rail for LIRR. I am not sure how far each extends east or west.

FYI.. Merto North uese Grand Central and serves upstate NY and Conn.

[8D] Micha,
Penn Sta. is at 34th Street and Seventh Ave.
Grand Central is at 42nd Street and Park Ave.
Central Park goes from 59th to 110th Streets and from Eighth to Fifth Avenues.
All three are on Manhattan
Hells Gate takes Amtrak/Metro North over the East River from Queens to the Bronx.

This map might help -- http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/mnr/html/mnrmap.htm -- and you should be able to navigate all over the place from that link.

[:D]Enjoy !!

Penn station is located on Manhattan island, east of the Hudson river and west of the East river. Grand Central station is north of Penn station in Mid-town Manhattan. The station begins at about 42nd St and is aligned South-North. The tracks run underground, to the northern tip of Manhattan island where the tracks split. Some tracks go NE towards Conn. and New England, other tracks go straight north along the banks of the Hudson River. The Hell Gate Bridge brings trains from New England areas into Sunnyside yard in Queens, NY and then go through tunnels to Penn Station in NYC

I have some questions about the stations in New York.

Where does Penn Station is, i mean in which district of new york? Is it east or west of the hudson river? And where is grand central located? under the central park? And which parts of new york are connected by the hell gate bridge?
