3985 Schedule
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 28, 2003 9:34 PM
Several weeks ago I emailed some people and gave them this link. I guess I should have made a post then about it too, but I just didn't. [:(]

So just for info so everyone has a chance to see it and maybe the 3985 I will make a post to draw attention to it. [:)]

I hope this helps and maybe you can plan to see it on its trip. [;)]

Now that the holidays are over I am bringing this back to daylight. Now we can concentrate on the finer things in life -- like a nice big steam engine. [yeah]

Many of the forums members will have an opportunity to see this monster. [8D] Some unfortunately won't get to. [:(]

Hopefully, you can. Some might have to travel a bit to see it, but it is worth the time to do so. [:)]

Now would be a perfect time for us forumers to get together.

Look at the schedule. I'll be at the Coffeyville, KS stop and/or maybe the Kansas City stop the next day.

There continues to be many questions being asked about the 3985 trip. The schedule is available by clicking the link in this thread.

Other questions being asked are where will the engine be on display. Check with local railfans or a local UP office. The engine usually is on display at the same place every year. Here in North Little Rock, that is at the Jenks Shops. But local people could tell you where it will be in your area. Your local newspaper might could give you some info. Check around, someone will know for sure.

Looks as if it'll be rolling through Campbell, MO where I used to live. And I had a great view of the mainline there.

The 3985 will most likely be behind the Jenks shops here in North Little Rock. You can see it from the old CTC building on 4 th street. If you know where the circus train is usually parked it is the same area. [;)]

They already are hovering over the tracks in my area NE of Little Rock.. The UP work gangs must be going over every tie and weld on every inch. We waited for 30 minutes as they cleared the crossing.

You folks south of St. Louis give me a warning here or by email when it leaves. Ill figure my time to intercept the engine from either that or ETA to Little Rock.

If any one has a map of UP's trackage, can you tell me if it has to go through the Dallas area after Tyler. I missed it when it came through Fort Worth and passed Tower 55 last year. Or was it two years ago?[V]

The Challenger was in KC yesterday, but I didn't make it down to Union Station to see it. The Kansas City Star ran a story on it. Click on the link for the story. You'll have to register to view it, but it's FREE.

Jan 19

The schedule indicates they will be mostly east of Dallas/Fort Worth. From Tyler, they will be going to Hearn and on to Houston, then on the way back north going to Longview, then North Little Rock.

It looks like a road trip for you Dallas area people. Sorry, about that. [:(]

Well friends, the SuperBowl is over. Congrats if your team won, sorry if it didn't. Russell and I are still crying over the Chiefs not making it all the way. But us Chiefs fans kinda have had this happen before. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know, better luck next year.

Now, the 3985 will be leaving Houston and making the return trip to her home. So many of us still have a chance to see her in action along the way. Get the camera out and make sure the battery is good, and you have plenty of film. Ready, set, snap. Hope it is a really nice pic ya got there.

Chased 3985 along the MOPAC from Kilgore to Longview Texas this afternoon. Running about an hour - hour and a half behind the advertised. Large numbers of locals out to see the train and a pretty good group of well behaved railfans. How well behaved? Managed to get around train even with road construction and city streets at rush-hour. Caught two more passes before it got to the yard. Don't know exactly what to call it but will take "lucky" over "good" any day...

Got a few pictures in spite of less than great lighting conditions.

Good luck on down the line, and go ahead, take that "sick day."

Mainline Steam is required every now and then to maintain proper mental health...

Today I saw the 3985 again. The first time was on a passenger excursion from Little Rock to Van Buren (Fort Smith). Our weather is lousey, rain and kinda cold. Last night we had sleet/ice for a while but it only stuck for a short while. The wind makes it feel colder. But there was a large crowd who turned out to see it. Parking was a problem, and there really wasn't much room to get a good shot. I bought a few poster and will mail them out Saturday. Oh well, I know there will be other chances. Tomorrow when it leaves I hope to get a good shot or two. I hope the weather is better.
