Wednesday ... a big day for Trains but I'm stuck at the desk

Every day is a big day at Trains. We get to explore our favorite subject and share what we learn with you. Some days are just bigger than others. Today is one of those.

Three staff members are in the field. That doesn't happen every day. Heck, I get bored and lonely here, but I am glad that we're out there on the front lines of railroading. While we freeze on the tundra here in Wisconsin, Associate Editor David Lassen is in Florida, checking out the new Brightline train set to debut later this year. He's been at the contractor's meeting all this week, learning about the Class I railroads' capital spending plans for the year. That's always great info, and so far I already see big stories coming out of this. Associate Editor Steve Sweeney is in Washington, D.C., at the Transportation Research Board meeting, where he is gleaning technology column topics. And Assistant Editor Brian Schmidt is on MARS. The red planet, you ask? No, we did not fire him into space. He's at the Midwest Association of Rail Shippers meeting in Chicagoland. That gathering provides a great opportunity to listen to railroads and railroad customers.

But wait, there's more!

Famed videographer Rich Luckin is in the building, researching his next documentary for us, Selling Sunshine, the Florida trains. Ah, Florida and warm weather again! Look for Rich's video from us later this year. This morning, I'll be filming a video Q&A with Rich about this new project. And don't forget to check your PBS listings for a showing of our 2016 collaboration with Rich about the 20th Century Limited.

Until then, I'm editing News Wire stories and chipping away at an edit of an April issue story and preparing to handoff May features to our designers next week. There's never a dull moment here.
