My good friend and videographer Kevin Gilliam visited the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad shops at Ridgeley, W.Va., on Friday. He’s working on a documentary video for Trains about the restoration of Chesapeake & Ohio 2-6-6-2 No. 1309 for release next year after the locomotive runs in early 2017. He got good shots of the crew working with the steam pipes that lead to the smokebox, the restored tender, and the lead engine being prepped for the day coming soon when the engine will be re-wheeled. I wanted to make sure to share them with you because I know many of you are eager for news about this project.
The big Mallet will be one of the big superstars of American steam when it debuts. That’s another reason why we’re producing a special issue, Big Steam is Back, that will appear in June 2017. So consider this to be a sneak peek at the 100-pages on restored steam giants that we’re already preparing. You can guess that some of your other favorites will be featured, as well: Union Pacific 844, Santa Fe 2926, Norfolk & Western No. 611, and many more.
We’ll update the Western Maryland Scenic project often, as it grows closer to completion. Be sure to check back here and also on NewsWire for the latest. Have a great weekend!
