A year ago I had the privilege of hosting one of three Trains Magazine 75th anniversary tours of Colorado. It was my first visit to each of the attractions on the itinerary, and I came away with a new appreciation for railroading in the Centennial State. In no particular order, here are three favorite destinations from that trip:
CUMBRES & TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is one of Colorado's classic narrow gauge attractions. The scenery is ever changing, from green hills outside of Chama to the rocky faces of the Cumbres Gorge and desert scrub of Antonito. The variety really sets this destination apart from other narrow gauge venues in the state. Another selling point for railfans: It's largely a pristine railroad, with few signs of modification for people hauling.
COLORADO RAILROAD MUSEUM
The first stop of the tour, the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden really helped set the stage for the week ahead. I was able to take some of the state's rich history – and get accustomed to sucking in cinders in an open car! Be sure to visit during a special event when the steam is fired up; otherwise, regular operations consist of one of the legendary "Galloping Goose" motor cars from the famed Rio Grande Southern.
RIO GRANDE SCENIC
Other trips may have more dramatic scenery, and frankly after a week it all started to look the same, but the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad excels at comfort. Our group had access to a full length dome car and former Illinois Central observation lounge, which offer an outstanding view of the San Luis Valley and La Veta Pass. A well stocked bar is available for patrons, so be sure to enjoy a martini on the ride. Looking for more than a train ride? You can take in an outdoor concert at Fir, nestled in near the summit, on some runs!
