The tour of Germany: Cologne, and the busy bridge.

Our Trains Magazine tour of Germany is off to a spectacular start.

After assembling in Frankfurt, our group of 43 received its first taste of the German railways, the Deuche Bahn, with a trip along the Rhine River to Cologne, where we stayed almost in the shadow of the famous Cologne Cathedral — once the world’s tallest building — and just a few hundred yards from the main train station. This also meant we were adjacent to the Hohenzollern Bridge — reputed, believably, to be the busiest railroad bridge in the world.

With much of the day free, I had planned to explore the city a bit, but I was so captivated by the activity of the bridge that I spent the day watching the action across its six tracks — two for the local commuter trains, and two in each direction for national network trains — and taking hundreds of pictures. I did briefly visit the very crowded cathedral, and paid the 4 Euro fee to climb the 535 steps to the top of its belfry — but that was in part to see what the bridge traffic looked like from on high.

Three trains converge on the Hohenzollern Bridge.

There are stations at both ends of the bridge — Koln Hauptbahnhof (the main station) at one end, and Koln Messe/Deutz at the other — and the platforms on each provide excellent places to shoot the action. Here’s a small selection of photos from the day. I apologize for the small size of the photos; it took a work-around to be able to get photos to post to our blog from the road.

Trains meet on the bridge. In the foreground are the 'Locks of Love,' left by couples to signify their relationship. The fence on one side of the bridge is covered with the locks; the other side is just beginning to fill up.

With the cathedral in the background, two trains approach the Messe/Deutz station.

An ICE train approaches as a regional train leaves Messe/Deutz.

From the platform at Cologne's main station, an ICE train passes with the cathedral in the background.

Three trains meet on the bridge.

More than 1,000 trains per day are said to pass over the bridge.

Two trains approach the main station on the middle span of the bridge. The left-hand span (looking in this direction) are for commuter trains; the middle span carries traffic toward the main station, and the right-hand span carries outbound traffic.

Oh, one note: This was all posted from the wi-fi on the first of our three trains today (Sunday), which are taking us to Wernigerode, where we'll spend three nights to provide us ample time to ride the Harz steam railroad. I'll post from there when I get the chance.
