2014 Trains Photo Contest

Thanks again for sending us nearly 350 images, depicting 123 sequences for our 2014 contest. The theme was "sequence." The challenge was to send a single two- or three-photo sequence in a theme of your choosing. Check out the winners below, and please let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Grand prize: Robert P. Schmidt's three-photo sequence of an Erie Lackawanna switchman at Griffith, Ind., in 1971.

First prize: Misko Kranjec's three-photo sequence of a couple reuniting at the main railway station in Ljubljana, Slovenia in May 2004.

Second prize: Steve Carter's sequence of three photos depicting an eastbound intermodal train on the BNSF Transcon on Sept. 18, 2013.

Runner-up: Eric Williams' three-photo sequence of commuters boarding an NJ Transit train at Mountain Station in South Orange, N.J., on Nov. 5, 2013.

Runner-up: John K. Herreshoff's three-image sequence of a goose crossing the path of a Canadian National freight at Durand, Mich., on May 8, 2014. (The goose landed safely, btw.)

Runner-up: Ron Bouwhuis' series of three photos showing large vessels going through the locks of the Welland Canal at St. Catharines, Ontario. The center photo shows a southbound Canadian National train cutting through the scene.

Runner-up: Ken Fitzgerald's three pictures show a mechanical department employee working through all eight throttle notches on a Fort Worth & Western SD40-2 at Hodge Yard in Forth Worth, Texas, on May 31, 2014.

Runner-up: Thomas Taylor waited 40 years for his two-photo sequence at Feather River Canyon, Calif. Left, on June 17, 1968, Western Pacific California Zephyr No. 18 heads east. Right, on June 22, 2008, a Union Pacific freight, with two DPUs on the rear, heads west.
