Tom’s Montana Protest, week 2: The Paradise Local heads to St. Regis

A three-car Paradise local rolls through Quinns, Mont.

I'll be sharing one photo of my trip every week until I head out to Montana once again. I guess I look at it like my way of holding a protest, or going on strike, until I get my way and I depart for Big Sky Country. Along the way, I will try to give everyone some information, and other tidbits about each photograph. So come along, and join me in my protest!

The Paradise Local finished up its switching chores in Paradise and highballed for St. Regis. Tricon Timber in St. Regis is the first stop on the local's trip. Thanks to exports to China, Tricon has remained busy in a tough lumber market. When the local departed Paradise, it had only three MRL woodchip cars behind the GP9s, but it was a nifty little all-MRL train. Cascade Green paint and old Burlington Northern lettering is bleeding through two of the three woodchip cars, showing their true color. It's almost like the MRL blue paint applied to these cars was water-soluble. In the photo above, the train is skirting the Clark Fork River at Quinns, Mont. After working Tricon, the local will return west to Paradise before heading over to Thompson River Lumber east of Thompson Falls. I wish the sun was out here a little bit more, but I'll take a pair of GP9s, old woodchip hoppers, and the beautiful Montana scenery any day!

After shooting the train at Quinns, I pointed our rental car east. We had plans to meet a friend in the Three Forks/Lombard area where we would be camping that night.
