I've been using my wide angle lens a lot throughout my photo project this month, since it helps me to gain new perspectives around the city. I decided to try my telephoto lens this morning at a spot I've often wanted to try. At the busy intersection of Highway 100 and Bluemound Road in Wauwatosa, Wis., the Union Pacific double track main line from Butler, Wis., to Proviso, Ill., goes beneath the streets. This location is the closest thing to a tunnel you're going to find in this area, and it provides a nice view looking straight down the tracks.

What I like:

Norfolk Southern standard cab No. 8805 on the point. She's a hot leader for this hot Z train! I also like the black-and-white conversion. Since this morning was cloudy, I had difficulty attaining light with the "tele." Overall, I'm pleased.

What I don't like:

Shooting at ISO 400 through a chain link fence on a dark, cloudy morning isn't my cup of Red Bull. I'd prefer more light. But the ever-changing conditions make this hobby challenging and so much fun!

What I learned:

When shooting manual on a DSLR, you must know your settings to be able to make adjustments on the fly, as light conditions change. Although I've been photographing for a few years now, I still feel that I have much to learn. And, again I was reminded how nice it is to have friends that will provide a "heads up" on train movements like this Roadrailer!
