Digitrax Infrared
Posted by scole100 on Wednesday, November 26, 2003 8:46 AM
I am looking into getting the Super Empire Builder set from Digitrax. I have a medium size, 20x16 foot, "L" shaped layout. I was looking into using the infrared wireless option. I was wondering if anyone has used it and can tell me how well it works. Also is there anything that I must consider before I go down this route? I have an older MRC 2000 DCC system now, but I want sound. I don't know about the radio wireless option because I have wireless phones that operate on the same frequency and I am concerned about interference. Also it is alot more expensive and that takes away from the money I could spend on sound equiped loco's

I have an around the room layout and use one UR90 which is located at the entrance to the room at ceiling height.. Since it is in line-of-sight by any operator, one works for me. You must plug in your throttle to select an engine but I don't find that a problem as I have jacks all around the room.

I am happy with infra-red.

Hope I answered your question...Ken

I have a UR91 which can do IR or radio. I use radio and have never had any problems with cell phones or cordless phones or anything else for that matter. IR does have the advantage of being immune to radio interference and it costs less. If you can locate an IR reciever or two so that it can "see" your throttles it will work fine.

I started out using "Catnip" infrared, made in Australia I believe. This was first generation infrared and is frustrating (I still use it at a friend's home layout) to use. If you don't have the eye of a sniper and get your aim perfect, the unit won't respond to commands.

Today's infrared is much further along. Test your TV infrared unit out. Instead of pointing at the tv try bouncing the signal to it from walls and ceiling, you will be surprised at how much the tv sensor picks up. The digitrax system is similiar, however in a room your size, I would suggest you get two units; they're cheap enough that you can. Or maybe start out with one expecting to have to add another, if it works without the second one, then great.

I haven't used the Digitrax infrared, but I have put out a number of queries just like yours over the past two years, many seem to be very happy with it. I plan to use it on my layout - track is one third in.

Reguarding wireless radio throttles:

Many wireless phones (not cell phones) are set up to use a range of frequencies in the 900 mhz range. If the phone finds that one of the frequencies is in use, it simply switches to another unused frequency within the 900 mhz range. Ever try to see how far from the base station your wireless phone will work? Some will work from as far as 1/4 mile away. Thus your neighbor's wireless phone and your phone could interfere with each other, but they don't. Each phone will find and use a different frequency. Therefor, you shouldn't have any trouble using the 900 mhz radio throttles if you should choose to. You may want to try it out first to see if you have a problem. I have a Digitrax radio throttle, and also have a wireless phone. So far no problems.
