N scale is a tough one to find good small steamers in.

Bachmann made a 4-4-0 old timer set with either a 4 car set of freight cars or 3 small passenger cars. It may appear closer to Dec in holiday sets. Be sure the loco runs if you find it! Their spectrum consol 2-8-0 is a much better loco. Be sure that it runs if you find one!

MDC has a sweet 2-8-0 in a variety of schemes. They also sell a 4 car set of overton or overland passenger cars, and a 4 car set of old time freight cars.

It may be even better to look at one of the FT's or GP's and set your layout in a more recent time.

N Scale is going to be problematic for that era, unless you plan to scratchbuild. N Scale tends to be heavily modern oriented, although there's a decent amount of stuff available from the late steam era (mid 30's) on.

HO Scale has a decent amount of stuff available for the late 1800's, but it will mostly be craftsman stuff.

To find out the info you need, you'll need to decide on a railroad (UP, Central Pacific, D&RGS are all good bets) and then find some books on their early years.

I'd like to set up a small layout in N scale modelling a western town. What type of trains ran out west in the late 1800's? I was thinking of Central Pacific and Union Pacific. I would like a passenger train and maybe a stock/cargo train. I want period cars but have no idea what models of engines or cars that I should be looking for. How can I find out about a specific period train and then actually find the period cars to match? I look on the internet but I must be looking in the wrong place. Also, will I have to scratchbuild all the houses of the town or is there a place I can find houses to buy or pattern after? Any help would be appreciated.
