Two, the Southern and the L&N. My railroad is set in southwest North Carolina in the late '40's so both roads are appropriate for the time and place.

Whatever I see on the prototype, plus whatever tickles my fancy. I got a sweet deal on an Athearn PS 5244 boxcar in B&M, and it's gonna get the "Mike Rose Treatment" (tm)!

One plus to modelling a regional or a shortline - you can have all kinds of cool paint schemes!

It depends on the best price I can find on a quality item. I try to target N&W as my primary road, but am unwilling (and unable) to shell out a great deal of money to get exactly what I want. So instead of a pair of N&W SD-35's, I get a pair of ACL SD-35's at a price that I could not get close to with N&W - and so ACL becomes another roadname running on my layout.

I think being too picky just costs too much. [:D]

Maybe I shoulda gone for 6+, however, my primary roads consists of my home road in Central 'Orygun', the Great Northern and Wobbly. Espee has a one o' day run through and I also created a short line feeder connection. And, well, then there is my daughter's 'Chessie' stuff - - - - - -

Right now I just run two - Union Pacific and Santa Fe. In the future I plan to run my own version of the Rio Grande as well. In addition to modeling multiple roads, I'm also thinking about modeling different eras as time goes on.

CSX, NS, and a regional Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton RR. The C,H, & D was once a real railroad but it vanished back in the dark ages of steam [:D]
My version is what the C,H,&D could have been had it survived until present times. Plus a lease unit.

I started out with one but it sort of evolved from there because of some really neat stuff available. So now I have CB&Q, AT&SF, UP, C&NW and IC. All pre-merger stuff. All roads cross somewhere in the midwest.

I have 2: my Central Missouri & Southern and its wholly-owned subsidiary, the Osage Valley Tie & Lumber Co. The OVT&L is a self-contained logging road. The CM&S will eventually interchange with Missouri Pacific and M-K-T ("Katy") - when that part of the benchwork is completed.

The question is a bit too open ended (ie ambiguous) I run locomotives of one railroad that I Model with a few of predecessor roads when I modernize for a session but have rolling stock from all connected and some further foreing as would be found on the prototype.

Right now my layout is "laid up", but soon I will be running MILW RD, GN and SOO. Kind of an upper midwest rural locale. I would like to add CB&Q, and NP just to add a little flavor! Recently, Atlas added the GE U25B in N scale to its excellent line of diesels. When I saw a CB&Q & GN in Sky Blue together, I thought that would make a great patriotic combination![;)]

I'm running 6 regional carriers most of which are now fallen flags that still live in my basement, Most of which have online interchange with my own Fictious AC&E RR
The others are B&M, MEC, D&H, CP and BAR . The RR is large, double decked, and divided into four main areas of service. B&M is predominant in one area with a smattering of MEC and my road doing a few jobs. MEC is the central player in another with the BAR & my road handling some of the work. Bar is predominant in another section with MEC making up a few consists. The road primarily handles wood products from the great Maine woods and ships them south and to the online industries (3 Paper Mills) Thie empties return North on other scheduled trains. The CP & D&H are merely interchanged and used as turns in two of the major yards.
My own AC&E RR has it's own yard and services a seaport and 16 industries (requires 9 units to handle the work). There is also a lot of run-thru traffic from one staging to another some 500 feet away.
All in all I'd say the answer to this question is whatever is plauseable and you have the space, ability & time to portrey in a reasonably realistic fashion is what works. Operations sessions (8+ Operators) are enhanced by the use of multiple schemes but a single carrier can be just as effective
There's no right answer or wrong for that matter. Just enjoy "keeping em on the tracks"

I run almost all Great Northern (circa 1966-1967) with interchange from NP and Soo, but my 9 year old son sure likes modern Santa Fe and BN/BNSF so who am I to discourage him becoming a model railroader himself? The lash-ups might look a little strange but it's priceless.

My own lines, MCR, MHR, MSR and MTR, along with NS and CSX. From time to time you will also see leased /run-through units from BNSF, UP, CP, KCS and CN, along with individual leased units, including one from NERLX. Amtrak also operates on the MCR System.

I run CN and Quebec/Gatineau RR as well as VIA Rail for passenger trains. I operate on N scale and I am in the process of rebuilding my entire layout as I just move to my retirement house. I hope to have my new layout running by early Fall.

The Delaware & Hudson. I don't follow the prototype exactly, I just use the name and logo along with the color scheme.

I'll be running 4. My fictional home line, and intercange/run-through with BN, SP, and the ATSF-All in Texas. My brother models D&H, so strange things will turn up on both layouts.

2 roads. My primary model interest is CN transition era but I also have some CP equipment in that nice maroon and gray. There is no formal interchange on my layout at the present, but I would like to include one in my forthcoming layout redesign.

In my model railroad world my railroad owns and operates the LNE, Reading, and CNJ. They also have agreements with the B&O, C&O, Western Maryland, PRSL, and PRR. SO any of these roadnames can show up. I also model a later period and Chesssie, and Penn Central can show up.

It's interesting how many people run a "real" railroad and a freelance road as well. (Do I hear a future poll coming?) I do the same. My HO scale layout features the Missouri Pacific in the early 80's with my own freelance Cedar Branch & Western. Its time frame shifts depending on which engine and cabooses I pull out.

I can't imagine modeling any more railroads. I've got more Mopac engines and cabooses than I could ever run in a month! And I just keep hitting eBay....(hey, where's the ‘bid now' button?)

beside a quite large swiss railway collection I run only one american RR: IC, as a souvenir of my study timesin Illinois. I started because models in the US were so cheap compared to european... for the price of 4 european engines I brought home a full railroad!

lately a few 'foreigner steam engines (N&W, UP)' sneaked in.. i just could not resist!

I run anything under the sun and my own railroad (Sheboygan & Lake Superior). I used to by anything that looked good, but now I am mostly buying modern equipment unless a model catches my eye and undecorated models.
I love the smell of ALCo smoke in the Morning. "Long live the 251!!!" I miss the GBW and my favorite uncle is Uncle Pete. Uncle Pete eats Space Noodles for breakfast.

Six.... regions that is;
I guess I have that collector gene. Because I have more equipment than could be practical.
I recently hit 400 because of tax refund check and Greenburg show.
Therefore I have divided int6o six regions.
In my world NYC and PRR are still independent. Some PC thrown in.
Central of NJ, Erie, Erie Lackawanna, Delaware & Hudson, Reading, Atlantic Coast Line all become the "East".
I like BN with GN mixed in.
I have N&W mixed with Southern and NS like it's a short time after the merger.
Finally CP, NP, UP and SP all become the "Pacific".
I think the plusses of this system are: each region gets assigned an industry and a corresponding car type. Therefore, BN has grain storage and consequently, covered hoppers. PRR is my coal carrier. NYC is TOFC etc.
I like to rotate the roads through the year. Two months at a time and thus I don't get tired and bored of one set. I also concentrate on the industry and scenery of the current road and match region to season.
A wild scheme but works for me.

Anything which ran around Chicago in the late 80's and early 90's, mainly BN, CSX, NS, KCS, IC, SP and some belt /short lines, with occasional visits from a host of others - too many to count.

With a little bit of deft swapping of buildings, I can also run Alabama based companies (see as above, but with different shortlines)

I also model the North Eastern Railway (UK) during the first world war.

On my present layout I model merger era MoPac, so I have locomotives sporting UP, MoPac, and WP shcemes. On my new layout currently in production I am modeling BNSF in summer, 2000 in North Texas, so BNSF interchanges with UP, Fort Worth and Western, and Wichita, Tillman and Jackson. I have much more variety in rolling stock as well.

Let me think . . .
Amtrak, CNW, KCS, WICT (let's see if any railfans out there in cyberspace can spot that one), and WSOR, with a little bit of BNSF and GN thrown in. As you can figure out, much of my RR has fantasy included.

I approach it a little differently. I have a small table top layout, so for variety, I use different sets of locomotives/cabooses for different operating sessions. One time it will be a set of Southern engines circa mid-'80s, the next will be a set of Clinchfield engines circa mid-'60s, and there is C&O, Blue Creek (a freelanced road), and other leased engines from other roads that will participate from time to time.

I do have my own railroad, with a paint scheme. But since I can't paint worth a darn I stick with a lot of different road names, though I try to concentrate on a few.

Right now nothing but I plan to run almost everything including my own railroad the Great Lakes and Atlantic.

At my club we run mainly CN, CP, NS, VIA, Trillium Railways and Amtrak but we also use run through power including Conrail, CSX, CEFX, CNW, UP, SP, SOO, STL&H, Wisconsin Centreal, Ontario Northland, GT, Algoma Centreal, BNSF, Chessie System, Montana Railink and GO Transit. Now that CN bought BC Rail we will use that too.

My layout is modeled after the prototype, in a very high traffic area. The BNSF and CP are the main focus, but the UP is also included. A little Amtrak, abd a couple of smaller roads round out the mix.

boy... we have a lot of differnt road going though our layout... its supposed to be set some where in CA, and since im a big SP freak we have lots of SP. we also have some UP, santa fe, WP and amtrak that regularly runs though. My one brother really likes rio grande, so they run trains though. my other brother really likes pensy, so we also get our share of pensy trains going though. it may not be prtotypical.... but hey every one here is happy =P

Did anyone else notice that this topic started in July 2003, ended in September 2003 and then restarted a couple of days ago (a year later)? What's up with that?

Basically Rio Grande and SP. But Rio Grande is always power-short (this is the WWII era I model) so it's always 'borrowing' from other railroads. Which means I've got C&S, GN, ATSF, MOPAC, WP, and from the East Coast, C&O and Pennsy. Oh, yeah, and Missabe, but not really. The roster of 2-8-8-4's I use have become the Rio Grande's fictitous 3900 series.
