I always thought it was because the first engines were built in Brittan. Because they drive on the other hand of the road, it is standard convention over there for the driver to be on the right. I understand the first engine used in this country (on the B&O I think) was shipped here from Brittan an assembled by an engineer. Once the convention was established, it lived on forever. I suppose the signals came along later.
Interesting question. I wonder what the MR archives have to say about it. - Ed

Because the signals are on the right side, except for the CNW which is a "left handed" railroad, along with a few others. Carl

Yup I think you anwsered your own question there Buddy but yes engineer is on the rght fireman on the left

This may sound stupid but I'm not really sure of the right answer. What side of the cab in locos & diesels are the throttles? Is the engineer seated on the right facing forward & the fireman the left?
