I always thought it was because the first engines were built in Brittan. Because they drive on the other hand of the road, it is standard convention over there for the driver to be on the right. I understand the first engine used in this country (on the B&O I think) was shipped here from Brittan an assembled by an engineer. Once the convention was established, it lived on forever. I suppose the signals came along later. <br /> <br />Interesting question. I wonder what the MR archives have to say about it. - Ed
