Logging/Lumber ops on a shelf layout?

Hey this is topic #2 for me...I must be on an inquizative roll today...

Any way, onto the question at hand...

Has anybody created logging/lumber ops on a shelf layout? I haven't seen any in any of the layout books I purchased. So I assume it's a bit of a rarity for whatever reason.

Actually I think it's sort of common. I've seen a few. Many real-life loggers used swichbacks, which really work well in a shelf layout.

This little logging shelf layout could be stretched and expanded to a longer shelf and there are a lot of variations possible on a similar theme. It's pretty tight just due to the very small space for HO and was intended more for display than operation. But a little ops would be possible

You could model the mill adjacent to the main line, but with a breezeway/conveyor passing over the main, and two team tracks parallel to the main, one on either side...accessed with at three-way switch? Lumber piled in stacks on either side of the main. Keeps it doable and tidy.

Just a thought.

have you seen the Track plan book by Iain Rice from kalmbach thats got a shelf logging layout in it. I seem to remember it's in three scenes, 1 on each wall

This site is definitely worth a look. One thing to note is how well the backdrop and the foreground have been integrated together. Tobias has information on how he produced that backdrop, where he got those excellent trees, and some fine scratchbuilt model work to boot. I belive in the Model railroad planning 98 there is a nice shelf logging railway.... It's one that im considering using as a base for mine, either that or Mainline CSX losely based in baltimore,md... that is if my G doesnt work out...

nice layout . i was just thinking the other day i could use IKEA shelving as the support for my layout . funny to see how other people have the same ideas [:)] . at least now i know it works !
