Nickel Plate Products ran the IC commuter electrics in HO brass in the 1970s, as a two-car set (one power car, one trailer). They pop up on Ebay occasionally.

If brass is out of your price range, you could make OK stand-ins by using the Athearn heavyweight coaches and redetailing the ends and floor, and by adding pantographs.

Have you dug through the IC online database?
http://www.icgphotos.com/
They've at least got an all-time roster. From that data, you could figure out for yourself which engines were on the roster in 1996.

I got my IC SD70 running. I took the trucks from my NS SD80MAC that got damaged when it tried to fly and put them on the SD70 and it works just fine.

The SD70 is in Illinois Central paint and it is an Athearn Genesis unit.

yes it is the best IC paint scheme-i don't know if it has a name but somewhere i read the logo on the front was called the "death star"- i would like to get one of these: http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATHG6111 but first i want a Proto 2000 BNSF GP38-2 - hey i just noticed something- the engine in my link is #1006 and it looks as if the first engine in your sig pic is #1006 --also was my all-time roster any help?

Yes, it was a big help. You are right, it is the lead engine in my pic. The reason I picked that picture is because it is the Athearn Genesis SD70 that I have.

well glad i could help you, i learned something from the roster myself- the prototype of my IC U33C #5056 was retired and scrapped in the 1980's- i'm starting to want a Genesis SD70 "death star" more and more -really getting hooked on the black paint- maybe i will get one before a P2K GP38-2 also how does your SD70 run? what other brands is it comparable to? Atlas? P2K?- also the site w/ the IC roster has a roster for most other RR's- i'm starting to look at the BNSF one --here's a link

It runs fine. I had to replace the trucks though. They were warped so I put SD80MAC trucks on it and it is just fine. I will look at the pics tonight.

Thanks guys.

I grew up along the IC in Park Forest. I am currently finishing my design and will start construction after the first of the year of a layout featuring the ex-PC/NYC/MC Joliet line with an interchange with the IC at Matteson. I've modeled the IC off and on since 1968 and after a 20 yr break collecting, but not building a layout, I will have an IC layout again.
