As near as I can recall, the doodlebug that ran on the Missouri Pacific was built by the Saint Louis Car Shops and was unique to the MOP. Sometimes it would be pulling a heavyweight passenger car, but usually ran alone. I remember that it was gasoline powered, and had a baggage/RPO section between the cab and passenger compartment. The front and cab were painted red, with tiger stripes on the nose, and the rest of it was black. It was taken out of service in the mid-1950's.

Our house was less than 100 feet across a back yard from the double-track Illinois Central line that ran between DuQuoin, Illinois, and Saint Louis, Missouri., and the MOP had a small depot and crossed the IC tracks on the other side of the city cemetery from our house, so both lines were clearly visible.

Both the IC and MOP had roundhouse facilities in Pinckneyville during the glory days of steam. Sometimes the IC City of New Orleans, pulled by diesels, would be detoured through Pinckneyville because of flooding or a derailment. That was always a major attraction, because all of the other IC passenger trains were steam.

Throughout World War II, troop trains would pass through on an almost daily basis heading toward Saint Louis. In those days, troop trains had priority, and we could always tell when one was coming through because all of the freight trains would be pulled off onto sidings.

I appreciate you answering my request about the doodlebug. Thanks!

BTW, since this an IC thread, I also have a few models of the IC. My first ride in a sleeping car was on the IC's Hawkeye from Sioux City, IA to Chicago (I got on in Fort Dodge). This was in the late 60's.

Well, I was wrong, as usual. The MOP has a historical society web site with two photos of their doodlebug. The front didn't have tiger stripes, it was a large radiator grill that filled the entire area between the windshields.

But no one has ever made a model of this doodlebug, or one that even looks close, because it was unique to the MOP.

This is the link to the best of the two photos:

http://www.mopac.org/photos_misc/mp_450.jpg

BTW, I received the replacement SD70 trucks from Athearn on Tuesday and installed them Wednesday. Athearn sent exactly what I needed -- one with black sideframes for the IC model, and one in silver for the BNSF warbonnet, so all 4 of my Genesis models are now back on the track.

4884bigboy,

Go to Athearn's web site at http://www.athearn.com

Click on "Contact Us" in the upper right-hand portion of the first page, and an e-mail form will be part of the next page to pop up. Fill in the data to identify the parts you need by model type (Genesis SD70) and road name; indicate that you need part numbers and prices, and check the box indicating that you want a reply. Then you can order directly from them based on the parts numbers and prices they give you.

His site is http://ztrainman.tripod.com/ The pic is in the "Other Railroads" section. I did not see any IC units friday. I guess cn doesnt want to run that much.

there are a bunch of Athearn SF "kodachrome" sd45-2's on ebay-- that paint came about when santa fe proposed to merge w/ southern pacific -SPSF southern pacific santa fe
the merge was rejected but yet SPSF painted some loco's --
some think SPSF stands for Shouldn't Paint So Fast

Thx dingoix. I dont know just how many are really left but that was the roster from my other site and I cant find a "straight" IC roster without it having CN on it. I like the IC engine ac4400fan. Im still working on my site. I put some pics on there last night. I also have a link to two forums on there, on is the one I started and one that trainboyH16-44 started. I agree, SPSF does = Shouldnt Paint So Fast.
