I've had an order in there since the start of january, and I still have heard nothing. I have also heard of problems like mine (Not receiving your items when told) from many others.
I will never purchase from them again. There support people tell you to 'Place the order again' and I already placed the order ocne, and it went through, they did get my payment. All I can say is.. SCAM

Err, Excuse me... I meant Standard Hobby Supply. I read a forum on National Hobby Supply and mixed the names.
Sorry.

I had a similar disappointing experience with an outfit called Nagengast Hardware, that had an ad in MR. They didn't rip-off my money, but after waiting a few months for my order I called them. (no toll free number), and was treated very rudely, after all, I AM the customer right? Well, after that call, I told them to cancel my order and destroy my check. I then ordered from Standard Hobby Supply, that's right, SHS, and had my items within a few weeks. I suppose ALL mail order outfits can screw up now and then. If you were charged for the order without getting your items, then you should persue it with small claims court. Chances are, they won't show up, then you will win by default. Actually COLLECTING, however, is another matter.
I guess the moral of the story here is, stick with the dealers that you have had good service from in the past. When you try to save a buck or two with an outfit you aren't familiar with, you take your chances.

Mail order has its frustrations and always has. In the old days of America's Hobby Center (May it rest in peace) sometimes your order would arrive even before you remembered sending it in and other times you'd wait forever and then be given a credit slip (NOT cash) refund or be told things were on back order.
But you know -- living here in Milwaukee where Walthers is located -- we can shop right there at the place where most hobby shops and mail order places get their supplies from. And I can tell you plenty of times things are out of stock there and are out of stock for months and months. The reason is the nature of the business -- some of these outfits crank out supplies once a year or so.

It also depends of the item you ordered. Although some mail order places advertise they have something it stock it may be back ordered and not shipped to them yet. A two to three month delay is not unusual for some of these places.

Shop at your local hobby shop - you may pay a bit more but at least youre dealing face to face with someone and encouraging local business.

Heck, Dave, I sure envey you being able to drive to Walthers and go shopping. I do recall "AHC", but my all time favorite was "Hobbies for Men", Now if ever we should lament the passing of a great mail order shop, it would be HFM. As a teenager, I built most of my layout by mowing lawns in the summer, and shoveling snow in winter, and had to watch my pennies. Well, HFM sure did me right back then. These days it seems like everybody is trying to get rich off the hobby. A hundred bucks for an HO scale plastic diesel? come on, get real! And that's when they are on "sale". Shoot, I might as well start scratchbuilding my own stuff for that price...
The worse part of it, all this stuff is being made in countries like China, and Taiwan, where the labor rate is about 5-to 10 bucks a day, IF they are lucky.
Oh well, NAFTA strikes again..........

I've placed a number of different orders with Standard Hobby Supply and never had a problem with them. My order usually showed up within two weeks. I suggest you call them on thier toll free number and inquire about your order.

I'd like to support my LHS, and usually buy smaller items there. But it's very difficult to justify paying $90 MSRP (excluding tax) for an Atlas N-scale loco when I just purchased two of the same Atlas locos on ebay for less (including freight) than one at MSRP!
Something's very wrong about those economics...

I have used Standard Hobbies off and on for years and never had a problem.Have you checked to see what the problem is? Remember they received hundreds of orders a week and this outfit has been around for years..
I to miss Hobbies for Men.As far as AHC yes may it rest in peace. They still own me $12.57.I used them once and never again.

Larry...I too miss Hobbies for Men, but it was too good to be true, prices too cheap, too big an expansion, maybe...but pretty good while it lasted. Do you remember 'Hobby People' [L.A., I think ], in the 60's..they were pretty good too, but always had a backorder with a voucher for next purchase.

Mike I faintly recall that name but during the 60s I never mail ordered.I was young had a job on the PRR and never thought about saving cost like I do now.Mike,I hardly mail ordered before the prices went though the roof. The only exception to that would be when I lived in Kentucky. The nearest hobby shop was 75 miles away in Huntington WVa or 115 miles away in Columbus Oh.I was also working on the C&O/Chessie at the time and there was very little time off to make such trips..
