Here's one of a set of 3 that I have. All started life as Trains Unlimited (formerly Front Range) High hood GP9's. All chopped nosed, detailed and painted for the Maryland Midland.

As soon as I can find them, I'll post a few more, including a SD40 with a new twist on the CSX dark future scheme!

Bob,

If you get a spare few minutes - I would love to see a few photo's of them - if your busy - no worries!

Here they both are:

Both made from Rivarossi E-units, with Accucal decals and Scalecoat paint. Added a few dettails.

Here are two more:

I call this one an RDC-.5 (point five). Cut apart Athearn RDC shell fitted to an Athearn SW-7 chassis. A fun one!

Of course VIA Rail did not have SD40-2's, but this one was made from a prototype. A movie was made in British Columbia - "Sudden Impact" - I think, and the movie company leased some VIA passenger cars for the movie. They couldn't get a VIA engine, so they leased a BC Rail SD40-2 and painted it up like a VIA engine. Mine is an Athearn with various paints and decals. There was a photo of the prototype movie engine in a Canadian magazine, and I used it to make my copy!

Bob,

YOU BUILT THE POCKET TURBINE!?!? THAT IS SO AWESOME! <I have that issue[:D]> It looks really good in blue.[;)] Do you have anymore photos you could show us of your custom creations? What you do is what I dream of doing![^]

My model was made from the article in RMC, I did not originate the article. My model was my version. Check the rest of this thread for more of my creations, more to come!

Bob Boudreau

I know you didn't write the article, I can't remember the author's name at the moment. But you still did build it, WHICH IS AWESOME. I wanted to build one myself after reading it, but I'm not to that level yet. It's good to see that there are people out there that will actually build the fictitious plans published in our modeling magazines.

Did you put the interior detail in it as well?

Here are two from my collection. They are/were classified as GS413-a by CN, the "Sweep" nickname was applied by railfans. Note the number series was changed from 7300 in my model to the 7100 series - you can see the different numbers on the cab.

That freelanced New Haven electric looks great: it has that heavy, rivet-laden, late-teens look that's so characteristic of the New Haven. Very nice.

Bob: Didn't you do a Point St. Charles "Sweep" conversion? Or did I imagine that? If so, could you post a pic. I'm thinking of doing one myself.

I made this model after seeing one three-quarter front view in "Extra 2200 South" magazine. I used an Athearn chassis and cab, and a long hood from an Athearn GP-9 "Geep", similar to what the prototype CN did. Their SW-1200RS diesels were having cooling problems, so they grafed the long hood from GP-9s onto them. There were several made 5-10 or so.

When I made my model, I did not have a photo of the back of the cab, so I left it stock. I later found out the window arrangement was quite different. But I did not bother to change my model.

Well, here are a pair of shots from my Wishram Road.
The first is a kitbashed, sorta, GP35E. The shell is RPP and mechanism Athearn. This puppy has been de-turbo'd and painted in my more complex scheme.[:D]

This here second puppy is my updated/simplified scheme. Good ol' Athearn U30C with Espee style details. it was gonna be Espee, but my road purchased and repainted her.[8D]

Of course custom paint on both models.

Almost all of locos are custom. Not too many Rock diesels in this paint scheme. Chech my album to see most of them.

If you get one then BE CAREFUL ABOUT INSTALLING DCC. I hear they have some diodes pointing the wrong way for some reason and they blow out the decoder the moment you try to operate the headlights.[:0]

Here are some of the loco's that I have done. They are all in HO Scale.

GATX #1237 is kitbashed from an Athearn SD40-2
BN #1507 is kitbashed from an RPP GP35
MI #1803 is a shortened Athearn U30B
SP #7832 is kitbashed from an RPP B23-7 and an Atlas C30-7
SOO #747 is an OMI SD40 that I added detail parts to and painted.

Enjoy, Dan

Continuing with my series, here's another fun one:

It's an Athearn GP-9 onto which I grafted on a leftover Detail Associates widecab to make a fantasy model. Other details from my parts box to make it more or less believeable! My story is the engine was involved in a wreck and the railroad had a spare wide cab available, and the used it.

The decals came from a friend who used to make custom models for Canadian Pacific. They would be presented to customers and retiring employees. When CP was working on changing over from their CPRail identity, this lettering was one of the schemes considered. So they had my friend have some custom Microscale decals made to letter some models for evaluation. The scheme eventually adopted was the "dual flags" one and not this one. A little bit of corporate history!

More to come!

Here is a D&H RS3 low nose conversion done as their Bicentennial unit. For more information on building this engine I have a step by step on my web site.
