I may speak only for myself - but if I'm plunking down around $5 for a glossy magazine - I want to see stuff that "wows" me. It's been that way as long as I can remember. Whether as a teen - or the decades thereafter. MR (and RMC) had the modeling that I aspired to achieve one day. I rarely found myself thinking "Sheesh... I could do THAT good".

I had my first photo published in MR's Trackside Photos in March of 1983. By was that exciting! I had later ones in the same section, they were mostly entries of mine in the Annual Photo Contest that did not place (I did win 1st, 2nd, 3rd (twice) and Honorable mention (three times) over the years. I haven't entered for several years now.

But I see these days that MR is often using in the Tarckside Photos submissions by photographers who do assignments for them such as Lou Sassi and others, the "semi professional" guys. I guess they want only the best photos here, but it seems to me that newcomers to the hobby should have an outlet too.

Nothing in MR but I've had a number of articles and separate pictures published in CTT. I've also got a few articles published in the TCA e-magazine. As for waiting for an article to get published I have two or three which are way past the 5 year wait mark and still haven't seen print.

My layout was featured in both MR and CTT back in 1993. The layout was torn down shortly after it appeared. I'm slowly pounding away at the new layout in the hopes of getting back into print.

I've had a few articles in S-Gaugian, one on my layout, one "how to" on kitbashing for s-gauge, and one on the pro's and con's of s-gauge. Of course these were free gratis articles, and sometimes the editor gets desperate for material. (Publishing mine is proof of that!)[:D][swg]

I can attest to your experience. It took four years for my article to appear in print after I received payment for it. I guess the good thing about being in one of the annual magazines is that you know a definate time frame up front. Hope you will continue to write articles despite the lengthy delays!

However, like FundyNorthern has indicated, I got disenchanted with writing articles after seeing how long they sometimes took from submission to publication (my record is 5 years) so I lost interest in this aspect of the hobby and haven't written anything since.

I had a letter to the editor published in the February 2005 issue of Model Railroader, it was in response to an article that Andy S. had in the December 2004 issue on building yards for layouts.

Hey! I liked that article! In fact I brought the idea along to our club and suggested we do the same - every one make a structure having to do with lobsters! (We're in Atlantic Canada where lobsters are a big deal).

Our challenge was to make a "Lester's Lobsters" into a restaurant, corner store, warehouse, etc. We found some small plastic lobsters and gave one to each member to incorporate into their structure, like the polar bear in your article.

Those of us who participated had a great time, and now each has a unique structure for our layouts.

Thanks for the inspiration! Perhaps I should find a photo of my model and post it here!

Don's Dream World (DDW) has been published in a Japanese N scale magazine. I live in Japan, and photographers from the magazine came over and took some professional quality pictures. I doubt that MR is going to send anyone over here any time soon, and the pictures that I have taken myself and sent to MR aren't quite magazine quality. DDW is mostly scenery, anyway, and probably wouldn't be of much interest people who are into realistic operations.

I collaborated with a friend to do the "Polar Bear Restaurant" article in the December 2001 Model Railroader. He wrote the article while I took all of the photos.

The article helped to pay for a train ride from Washington to Boston to see George Selios and his Franklin and South Manchester layout.

Published, yes. 3 articles in RMC and 14 in NMRA Bulletin, but nothing on my layout. I'm not that good a photog and the layout isn't MR material.

I've had three articles published in the NKPHTS magazine, one of which was a model review. I've got a few more articles planned, but haven't made the jump to the mainstream mags yet.

That's a very good point. I think it's getting to the point were on-line pictures/posts/websites/blogs are getting more visibility than the "Paper Press". I’m no modeling pro, but I find it remarkable that a picture hosting site I posted some of my layout photos on has had hundreds of viewings in a couple of years. Yeah, not quite up to paper press numbers [;)], but I’m also not out there trying to get people to see my pictures either. I’m sure that other more experienced modelers who have their own websites (like Fugate) get far more traffic.

Someday I think it’s all going to go on-line. No more paper magazines.

As noted earlier in this thread, MR does hav Lou Sassi and maybe others photograph layouts. They may do the writing, but it would be from material submitted by the owner. I know they do rewrite material so it will be in the "MR style".

I assume sending a photographer to do a layout would have to be for one that was outstanding. You would need to send them some sample snapshots first.

I believe they send out photographers to do layouts when there are several in the geographical area, to maximise their investment in the photographer's costs.

And if your layout is indeed photographed by MR, be prepared to wait several years before it appears in print.

Send MR some shots and ask!

My original MA&G (Mississippi Alabama & Gulf) layout was featured in the April 2005 Model Railroader. I wrote the article and took the photos myself. My new MA&G will be featured in next year's "Great Model Railroads 2007". While I will write this article as well, Lou Sassi will be doing the photography. My layout will also be the subject of an upcoming Allen Keller video as part of his "Great Model Railroads" series. I comment further on my first publication experience on my MA&G website.
