Just to let you know. I live in North Dakota. With the exception of the 6-7 major towns in the state, the rest still only have mail delivery at the post office. They will not even deliver to people who live in town. Everyone has a P.O. box. RFD is stil relevant out here in rural America.

You need to watch for other program RFD-TV has. This includes the Train Show, which shows layouts from O to HO to N to Garden Railroads. Love this program and they provide information and instruction. Also has some great vacation ideas. RFD also has another program strictly geared to Steam Engines and working lines. Programs are scheduled on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with repeats the following day. For those of you with Direct TV RFD can be found on channel 379. The guy from the train show reccently was filming down at the club I belong to's layout. I really wish I had dish network so I could watch this RFD.

RFD-TV has a new train show called The Train Show, done by someone on the east coast. It was on Wed evening, and again Thurs morning(3:30am) on Directv. I understand the guy doing the show has about 9 hrs of air time scheduled, and is looking for some layouts to tape. Wednesday's show was G gauge.

RFD originally meant Rural Free Delivery. It was a postal term in the early days. If you lived too far out in the sticks, you either had to pick your mail up at the post office, or pay to have it delivered. RFD was for those people who didn't live too far out. I believe RFD ended with the ZIP code program. ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Program, and came along in the late 50's or early 60's.

As for the TV channel, as was previously stated, it's programming is geared toward farming and rural life. Being a city slicker with cable, I don't get that channel. I kind of wish I did, but having reviewed their schedule, with the exception of 2 or 3 programs per week (the ones about trains) the rest is junk.

RFD stands for Rural Free Delivery.
Back in the old days, you could only get mail service in the cities and towns, but those that lived in the country had to come into town to get their mail. Finally the postal service began delivering to rural areas by charging a little more for general postage.

As for the channel itself. It involves programs that are of interest to people that are into cattle, horses and other farm animals as well as tractors and farming equipment. Trains are just a little extra something they do for their viewers.

I watch RFD quite a bit.
I live in Texas and I catch Great Layouts on Thursday evening at 6pm and Trains and Locomotives Saturday morning at 8 am.
They used to have another one on thursday called Trackside
I have a few recorded shows dealing UP's steam crew.
I wi***here was a show highlighting HO scale. I do enjoy the O scale layouts but its just not the same to me its still has a toy train feeling.

I know exactly which program you're referring to. I just wi***hey'd have some HO or even N stuff. They normally only have three rail O and once in a while some 2 rail O.

Keep watching, you might see my layout. The layout no longer exists, but it was at the Mall of America back in 1992 - 93. I have heard that RFD TV plays that series of tapes late at night. Other forum members have reported seeing it on RFD in the past.

I discovered RFD by accident.One night while laying in bed I was flipping though the channels and found a program about a rotary battling snow in Colorado,and it was being shoved by steam.Ive be a fan of RFD ever since

I was watching a train layout program on RFD one night. For those of you that aren't familiar with RFD, it's a channel that Dish Network offers. Anyway, they did a special on a guy that had spent about ten years building this gigantic O guage layout that was like 40 feet long and 10 feet wide. It had four or five levels, mountains, tunnels, bridges, tressles,etc. On one end he had a carnival going on that was all lit up and even had artificial fireworks in the back ground. In the middle he had a city and on the other end-if memory serves me right, a dock for ships and cargo. All of his locos and rolling stock were Lionel. It was amazing to say the least... I think the guy said he had something like $100,000.00 or more tied up in it. Must be nice.
