Sounds like it has the board with the plug and the two little jumpers. Easiest decoder for this is a NCE D14SRP. P-n-P, only takes a minute to install.

I really appreciate the replies! Do most LHS take the decoder back if you buy one that doesn't fit? :)

I have a similar engine with the same kind of plug in. I have the decoder specs right in front of me for the one I used. I used a 163D and it works flawlessly. Made by digitrax. These decoders seem flawless. I believe this decoder was 34 dollars.

The TCS decoders do not require mods to the roof weights. The decoder is a dongle style which I was able to fit on the rear end of the long hood, clear of the weights.

I looked through my notes ,and you do have to modify the roof weights regardless which decoder you use. Kato's web site shows how to do this. I took out the weights and ground some of the metal off to make room for the decoder.

I appreciate the advice George and Simon. I'll check with a dealer and see what they recommend.

Jacon -

You can use any decoder. I have used Digitrax, TCS and NCE decoders with my Z. More expensive decoders have more features, but ALL of them control direction, speed, and your main headlights (constant directional, on/off). And many decoders also have other, more unique light controls (dim, Mars light, ditch lights, etc) and other features (silent running "SuperSonic" or "Quiet Drive", transponder ID, etc.).

Many decoder makers have recommended decoders for specific models (sometimes, they are even right!). You might look up the suggestions and the decoder features on the maker's web site to find the one you want.

WIth my Kato SD40 (IMRL), I finally used a DH123P decoder, which works with the existing LED lights. It's "plug n play", but I had to remove one of the shell weights to make it fit. I also toned down the Kato's blue light with amber Gallery Glass while I was at it. In this case, if I remember correctly, the "recommended" NCE decoder did NOT fit - it wll go into my Athearn Genesis SD70M instead (hopefully).

Good luck !

- George

It does not have to be Digitrax. I have used Lenz, NCE and QSI decoders quite sucessfully with the Zephyr. As for which one, I would ask one of the good vendors like Bruce at www.litchfieldstation.com or tonys train exchange.

Which DCC Decoder?

I have a Kato SD-40 that is DCC ready, the instructions say to remove the two dummy plugs and plug in the decoder. I've just started using Digitrax's Zyphyr. Do I have to buy a Digitrax decoder or can I use any brand? How do I know which paticular decoder (in any brand) fits this particular locomotive? Do different decoders control different functions, for example.. do the cheaper ones only control direction and or speed, but not lights?
