Jacon -

You can use any decoder. I have used Digitrax, TCS and NCE decoders with my Z. More expensive decoders have more features, but ALL of them control direction, speed, and your main headlights (constant directional, on/off). And many decoders also have other, more unique light controls (dim, Mars light, ditch lights, etc) and other features (silent running "SuperSonic" or "Quiet Drive", transponder ID, etc.).

Many decoder makers have recommended decoders for specific models (sometimes, they are even right!). You might look up the suggestions and the decoder features on the maker's web site to find the one you want.

WIth my Kato SD40 (IMRL), I finally used a DH123P decoder, which works with the existing LED lights. It's "plug n play", but I had to remove one of the shell weights to make it fit. I also toned down the Kato's blue light with amber Gallery Glass while I was at it. In this case, if I remember correctly, the "recommended" NCE decoder did NOT fit - it wll go into my Athearn Genesis SD70M instead (hopefully).

Good luck !

- George
