I like bulldogs and boxers, old Rumley oil pull tractors and the International Harvester Scout, all extreme ugly and lovable. But the last diesel larger than a switcher that I consider in that class are the old Baldwin's.

Here's what I think to be the ugliest ,if not the fugliest locomotive ever to grace the rails.Although ,it did have 6000HP under the hood,it still is pretty ugly. Oh god,I can't bear to see it anymore, make it go away.

Call me the odd man out. I can't say I think much of the old F units. Probably becasue nearly every train set I had as a kid, had one of those things. I'm just sick to death of them. I like the old high nose diesels. I also can't stand the wide nose cabs, of the newer diesels.

My favorite engines are probably the high nosed GP 7s and 9s. I also really like the look of the C39-8. The arched cab roof, that's lower the hood section behind it, gives a neat hunchbacked look.

Steam never did anything for me, exept for the big articulateds. Those just had something that the other steamers lacked.

I saw one of those HIDEOUS electrics at Enola in the 70's.If I remember, there were 2 different ones, one 7000 HP,one 10,000.You could immagine how we felt, thinking the GG-1 was gonna get replaced by....THAT...It looks like a big ,stupid white fruit bat.

Ain't it good that we all got different tastes, otherwise all our layouts would be the same!!!!!!!!! Now that would be everything that everyone above has mentioned! ugly and boring! I bought a 2nd hand F7 just to have on an abandoned old siding, and got an sd40 working with a AC4400, helped by a gp38, no steam though, has anyone every posted a poll about your preference to the type of loco to the age you are? would be interesting.
ps, I especially love unit trains!!!!!!;-) sorry

Beauty in the eye of the beholder. No engine is ugly whether it is a steamer or a diesel. The F and E units were considered beauties of their time so were the Alco's. Today's diesels have that mean, powerful look and I like them.
Sorry, I just love trains!

I'll take what I can get.....except in MSTS! I've derailed so many F units and melted something on a steam engine in 1 min!

My point again...Most things people find unusual and ugly, I LIKE! That's a cool looking locomotive there in my opinion, because it is different.[:D] I've seen that in a magazine or two...I'll have to try to look them up again.
