Anyone can say "I am a 10 out of 10", but who knows? If your skills were judged and certified though a standard national procedure, then you may have an idea of where your skills lie. I must admit I've NEVER been satisfied with any scenery attempt I've made, starting about 30 years ago with a bag of AHM grass (remember the really bright green stuff?) glued directly to the plywood. I can get a decent rock casting or terrain shape but never get the color just the way I want it- so right now I'm a 0 too! I'm waiting for the scenery tutorial on this forum to continue! I'm here with my layout and from what I see some scenes are spectacular. And others, need some work. I guesss I would overall say 8. But, again, no other model railroaders have seen my layout in person. You must rely on my crappy photos. That shot of the loco on the trestle is beautiful. Harold, always enjoy seeing your great work. By the way, my March issue of RMC finally arrived (comes here by "burro express") and I got to see your article on modeling high grass. Very well done, congratulations. When the rest of the benchwork is finished and the track get laid, then I will see what kind of scene maker my kids and I are. They already are working on buildings for the Thomas temporary layout, and the idea was to have a family hobby. So while my scenery is 0, my kids will be awesome. Everything needs improvement. I look at my work and can see lots of areas for improvement. I am always looking for new techniques. Just a thought Harold Reply Casey Feedwater Member sinceJuly 2003 50 posts Posted by Casey Feedwater on Saturday, March 12, 2005 8:42 AM I would rate myself about an 8. That doesn't mean I think I'm "great" at doing scenery. It just means that I'm generally happy with what I'm able to accomplish. Once in a while, however, I see photos of scenery that is without any doubt excellent, and I realize I still have much to learn about the craft. I did all of the scenery in the photos below about 5 years ago. I used all of the usual methods and materials in one combination or another, so I have no new tips or "tricks" to pass on. Can't share pictures until I pay for my locos and then buy a digital camera. If I get good film pictures, I'll scan them and see if I can post them in the days ahead.
