I fully believe the show didn't do it justice. As an engineer, I've worked on several products that have been on the television news. The reporter's story always gives you a bit of a chuckle. They observe, don't really know what they're observing, then create an interesting story out of it.

Although they're usually trying to put a positive spin on things, they often miss what those in the field would consider the "important stuff". I'm sure this could have been the case with this model railroad story.

In any case, it was way cool to see a model railroad on TV!!!

They showed a shot of several MRR magazines, and I think they were hinting at the fact that this model railroad has been in them. I'd like to learn more about it.

That was Mike Ritschdorf's N&W Pokey layout. The TV show did not really do it justice. Along with being a beautiful layout, it is an absolute joy to operate. And Mike is one of the nicest and friendliest people you'll ever meet.

CARRfan;
If this was the guy that modeled N&W, transition era then its the same one that's been on at least two other times. I would personally love it if they covered more layouts with houses over them, to show a lot more sides to this hobby than just the one or two that gets featured on a small segment like this.

I happened to cath a home & garden channel show on basements last night. Sure enough, someone had a model railroad in their basement!

This guy was very serious - hardcore operation - everyone had a job to do on the layout. He worked on his layout on a daily basis, and it took a long time to get it set up for the weekly operating session.

I have to wonder how many people are this hardcore. It's difficult to tell just by reading stories on layouts in MR just how dedicated people are to their hobby. The amount of work it took seemed exhausting to me.

In any case, his layout was awesome, and I'd sure like to have a friend like that invite me over to "play with his trains".

In fact, I think that would be the ideal setup - to have a friend with a layout like this. I could still do some modelling at home, but then when I want to run some serious trains, go over to that guys house!
