That's pretty cool - there's a few really old steamers about (classifying built pre-1914 or so). City of Truro was recently returned to steamable condition - for those who don't know the history of this loco it's a Great Western Railway 4-4-0 that is thought to have been the first to hit 100mph in 1904 - the speed wasn't verified though, except by the crew on the loco speedometer and some passengers counting mileposts. It's also thought the GWR kept it quiet for a few years after so as not to scare passengers away - remember this was only around 70 years after people claimed that travelling at over 30mph would result in instant death through being unable to breathe!

Thanks for the link Rob! I didn;t even know any Pershings were left, let alone being restored! I've been interested in Pershings ever since I discovered that the Transportation Corps used them for steam engine training during WWII, and that DJH Models in the UK makes a kit for one in HO scale.

Not only is the A1 under construction, but Strasburg (last time I was there in 2001) is building from scratch a Stourbridge Lion, as well as kitbashing a real 2-8-0 into a 4-6-0 (or vise versa). They've also built three or four of the living steam Thomas engines.

Thanks for the web site for the A1. I was in York a few years ago and got to see and touch some of the running gear at that time, but it was just parts then and now it is really coming along. Is the boiler completed yet, or is it in construction?

Keep us alert to the first running dates, since tickets to the UK are resonable.

/me holds onto his hat about what might be turning the corner here, if we become less dependent on Oil for fuel source, coal sure can make the comeback and its already proven.

not sure what stage the boiler is up to but i can tell you it's an all welded affair that will be capable of running on coal AND oil, plans have been made so it can be converted to oil burner within a few days if required to do so (forward thinking), it's going to be very exciting to see a true new build steam loco with NO old canibalised bits from scrap loco's. [:D][yeah] HELL YEAHHHH
