So, you must all be Celebrities!

I'm not a celebrity!. I do like acting like a jerk on occasion, though. [D)]

My e-mail icon is active for this group (for a couple of years now) and I have never received and unsolicted mail.

I don't think this is anything to worry about. Someone mentioned using work mail, try a yahoo account, it's simple. Also, your ISP provides you with your own e-mail address.

Slotracer, Finally, someone caught me, this thread was a ruse to lure unsuspecting idiot type model railroaders into my sinister Electronic web! Even though you did not supply your email address to me, you were here long enough that I now have all your electronic data! YOU ARE NOW UNDER MY CONTROL, as I am the "CENTRAL SCARROOOOOTINIZER"

Really, niether I nor anyone else here has ever said you MUST supply this information! I was only interested in why people don't! Suggestion, you would have been better served stating you are a CELEBRITY!

You seem to be a tad paranoid about use of the internet. Maybe your right! However, I just wouldn't be happy being that afraid of doing anything in my life and if you truly feel the way you state, it is logical for you to drop out of sight/site, as far as the internet is concerned!

An infamous American (Charlie Manson) once said; "Paranoia is a form of awareness [Man] and awareness is Love"!

What's that old line..... "Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean that no one is following me." [:D]

I welcome junk mail............ they're the only people who care enough to write me! [(-D]

Hint....just look at the thread a few down on Spyware and the trainorders website. The web is becoming more and more dangerous place in so many ways with spyware, keystroke monitoring stuff, spam etc. Then you never know who all the yahooos are on any given website, I have gottne pestering emails from others on other message boards and grouos in the past.

Email is OPTIONAL....so is PROFILES>>>>OPTIONAL.. pe the other busy body thread that ran in January. I opt to limit my exposure, I don't go to loads of websites and links, don't use paypal, don't identify myself in any way anywhere on the web etc etc. You can call it paranoi or what ever suits you I call it common sense and controling ones own destiny. Some fool could make the sam idiodic statement that If I don't leave my wife's jewelry out on the street corner, my door unlocked and my car running out in the driveway I must be some grump who does not trust his neighbors. Pretty foolish point. Fill your profile and put up YOUR email all you want, I'll use the option Not to. If I want to communicate, that is what the forum is for in the first place. Forums I have ever used or considered using that require real info, and an eamil addy outside the yahoo or hotmail or other type emails I never register for, they can function witht he members they have. If they need my real ID info and a business or home eamil Addy than they can live on without me.

My ebay account is fictious as far as name and addy, when I buy or sell I give the real scoop to the buyer or seller. Believe it or not I had one guys actually ship an item to my fake addresss even though it is painfully abvious. A second seller admitted he was dumb enough to try and ship there, I caught him before he did. He was stupid enough to admit there was nothing obvious about the name and addy being false and got indignant about the entire ordeal.

Anything look strange about Chuck U. Farley at 123 ABC street ? Attica NY 11111
As things on the web get worse with more advanced sinister tracking software, aggressive pop ups spam ID theft and the like I forsee dropping off the web entirely, I just don't need it that much to be worth the hassle.

Another tip, I have quit subscribing to almost all magazines and society memberships, I'll pay more to get issues I want off teh shelf and keep my name from more junk mail circles. I make a habit of mis-spelling my name differently on anything I do join or subscribe to, that makes it easy to match junk mail mis-spellings to see just who is selling my information and cut hthem off next renewal time. The national trust was big on this, I opted to not have my names old, and they called when I failed to renew, I told the guy why I no longer would subscribe and he went on to tell me it was not them. When I explained my little trick and how I nailed them dead to rights he gave up and apologized, I think he realized the outfit he worked for was feeding him a line too.

Huh? Pretty harsh, I think, the idea that a member should give us their email address or get off the board. I'm happy to respect their privacy.

Well, this debate is over for me. It's been fun but fun can turn ugly very quickly. Hope no one feels like leaving because of what's been said here.

That member may not contribute a single post to the community and still, just by signing up for the account, they'll have access to those addresses.

If you click the email icon at the bottom of someone's post, it does NOT give you their email address.
So the idea that someone could create an account and sell email address' to spammers does not hold water. The only way for them to get YOUR email address is for YOU to email them. Go ahead, try to get my email address. Dave

Several times a year I recieve a email related to a thread or two on these forums. The low level of activity is just fine with me. I prefer the forums where everyone may read the posts.

I have been buried by spam in the past. I dont have that problem now. But.... if it becomes a problem then I will pitch the email completly from the internet. My ISP does a very good job stopping the spam.

I'm not so sure it's a problem, TrainBoard has a similar 'private message' function. Since it only gets used for messages between members, it's not overloaded like a regular email system.

I suspect it's just that it's an option that wasn't offered in the software package that MR used to set up their forums. They have the emailing through the forum option.

Muddycreek, I said "Most of us consider each other friends", I did not say "We're all friends"! If your going to quote me, don't make up WHAT I SAY, as YOU go along!

O.K., so here's a reality check for you; Since I have been a member on this forum which is since the end of 2002, I have had my email available on my posts. I have emailed 4-6 times and talked to only a few folks here. Only a couple of emails have originated from this forum for me. So, if you allow emails from this forum, you are not going to get 100s of emails a day from it! Trust me, none of you guys/gals are that popular! Also, since most of you use "handles", none of us can decifer whom the celebrities are so, why the secrecy?

I asked why you don't want to be emailed, and those of you whom do not want to be emailed have explained. The celebrity, paranoia, over estimation of self worth were jabs at you with an attempt at humor. I appologize, if you didn't get it.!

There's a forum that I belong to that discusses pinewood derby cars. Instead of allowing emails to be sent they have a message box for each member. If I want to contact someone directly I can put a message in his/her box. This works out really well. On the other hand, with the number of members here, such a system could prove problematic and require too much memory storage to make it work.

My only e-mail address is my professional one. I've tried several of the free e-mail services for personal e-mail and have found them to be worthless. (Just my own viewpoint). My company doesn't mind my receiving personal e-mails but has a rule against providing e-mail address to public forums and the like.

Many people are quite content to use this forum to carry on a conversation about a topic we all have in common and feel no need to carry it elsewhere for a one-on-one private chat.

I belong to many different forums on different topics and do not choose to make my email address known on all of them. Mine is public here and I do welcome private messages, but if it became a problem as it has been on occasion elsewhere I would remove it in a heartbeat.

I have lots of friends in other settings but I don't feel the need to invite everyone of them to call me at home. It has nothing to do with being a celebrity or being paranoid. Frankly , the last person I'd want to talk to is one who questions my motives and calls me names for not giving them my private contact info.

And you're wrong about one thing, not everyone in this group or any other needs to be considered a "friend" though I've become friends with a number of modelers that I've come to know through the forums. There is a difference between being friendly and being a friend.

Cordially,

Wayne

I'm a member of various forums (web design, snake breeding, etc) and make a practice of not allowing email from any of them. It isn't because I don't want contact with people (which is ridiculous considering I'm a member of the forum) but rather because, for unscrupulous people, it's very easy to sign up for a free account, and then go through the member list and harvest those email addresses for the purpose of selling them to spammers. I've had several previous email addresses rendered pretty much useless due almost to this fact alone. That member may not contribute a single post to the community and still, just by signing up for the account, they'll have access to those addresses.

I don't consider myself paranoid, I just don't have time to go through hundreds of emails a day trying to sort them out. Most forums have a good PM system anyway (not sure if we do here or not).

So for those of us who don't allow, it's not necessarily that we're unfriendly...for me it's just become habit.

When I was a kid growing up, I had a paper route. I would go to collect from all my customers. I would go up to all the doors and there would be Welcome mats. Except one. It said "Go Away." I hated collecting from that guy, even though he was nice enough and tipped when I collected. It might have been that he worked nights.

There is so much junk e-mail out there that I think there is an unwillingness to put yourself out there more than neccessary. I have allowed the e-mail option from the start and never had a problem from this forum at all. However, I do use my MSN account which is the one I use for any web site sign up. I have so far managed to keep my business e-mail relatively free of junk this way.
