I have belonged to clubs, but currently am not active in any. When my layout is to that point, I will invite some people I know for operating sessions.

I have no desire to invite people to help me build the layout, it is my creation.

Hold on their, Buckaroo. Like it or not, I am coming over to help you build that layout. Otherwise, it may never get built. I am growing old waiting for you to get started. Smile, Wink & Grin

You would be welcome, I have seen your construction and modeling skills.

If the weather holds, the basement windows will get glass blocked this week. That is the only remaining obstacle to a very large section of benchwork for which the materials are already in place.

I had hoped to have them done last fall, but too much work and family stuff, and then it got really cold and wet.....

Have been working on the detailed wiring diagrams for each interlocking, found a ninth Train Engineer throttle on Ebay recently, and got rid of a ton of stuff out of the basement.

Dunno about that, Douglas. I heard that Flo and Bruhilda are preparing a "special" meal for you.  Tongue Tied

Sheldon, your post confused me a bit.

I think you and Kevin are two of the most social members here, outside of the chit chatty stuff in the diner.

LOL. The next time you visit the Diner, Douglas, bring someone with you to test the food. The regulars may be laying in wait. Laugh

Rich

I wouldn't think that characterizing the convos that happen in the Diner as chit chat would be offensive?  I think that's what Diners have the reputation for and why the Mods created that thread.  I'd characterize anything not model train related as chit chat, but maybe that's just me.

And when you consider some of those on here who find me abrasive, you can see that I still am set in some ways that are a result of my introverted personality. Introverted people get only a small part of their self esteem from what others think of them, we are very internal, no matter how social of a public face we present.

Sheldon, I would hardly consider you introverted. What I admire about you is your ability to withstand the crap thrown your way. I consider you to be one of the most influential guys on the forum (next to me, of course).

If a person wants to leave, because of flaming or disagreements.

Wouldn't the flaming or disagreements carry over to other forums?  I lurk and occasionally post on other forums, and there seems to be many common members throughout many forums.

I don't read the forums as much as some others, but I can't imagine anybody taking issue with Kevin or engaging in disagreements, beyond having a bad day or something.

As I understand it, Kevin has come and gone from more forums than this one. Who knows, maybe he just gets bored.

I am in occasional contact with Kevin as he and I have several things in common beyond being freelance DC powered modelers. He does have some unique ideas about some things, no question, but overall a very generous and kind person.

It has been my experiance in life that people who are on the introverted side of the personality scale tend to also be people with high technical skill levels and no matter how much they try to "develop" their social skills, they tend to have some social awkwardness. They see the world more in "absolutes" than most of you.

No doubt that has a lot to with why Kevin and I have our detractors on here.

Because I know a bit more about Kevin they he ever revealed on here, I can tell you his previous occupation was highly technical and somewhat sensitive - which takes a speical kind of person.

Sheldon

Kevin is one of those people who want to be leaders, not followers, and there is nothing really wrong with that. But, yes, that annoys some people to no end. So, it becomes a love/hate relationship, so to speak. As far as detractors goes, that is a risk that we all take on a forum like this. if you are knowledgeable and offer an opinion, it is appreciated by most but detested by a few.

I'm sorry that SeeYou190 left...............but his action left me wondering. If a person wants to leave, because of flaming or disagreements............ just stop posting. Let the posts stay instead them going into "Anonymous" mode.

Near as I can tell Kevin left all his M-R posts standing. He always deleted his photos after thirty days. I really don't know what the reasoning behind that was.

I don't recall Kevin doing that, but I will take your word for it, Ed. Why would he do that?

I wondered about that as well. Why delete all of the photos?

The loss of photos often destroys an otherwise good and valuable thread. When Photobucket removed all of my posted photos, it wrecked more than a few threads that I had started on projects that I was working on. I should have started a class action lawsuit against Photobucket who was holding everyone hostage who had photos stored on the site.

BATMAN

Sheldon, I also enjoy your "to the point" manner and find it quite refreshing.

I spent decades on the ramp at Vancouver Airport with three radios and two phones strapped to me and with jet engines often running right next to me while wearing two sets of ear protection all talk was to the point in as few words as possible. My family often reminds me that my communication could be a little more flowery but old habits are hard to break. Unfortunately, this comes across in an even more harsh manner in print on a forum. I am trying to sweeten it up a bit, but old dogs......

Understood. I come largely from a construction background, another sometimes harsh environment where you need to be very direct when communicating.

We use to have a saying - there is only one boss on the job - you don't "ask" people to do things, you tell them what needs to happen.

Among other things, I did commerical and industrial electrical work, both in the field and as a project manager - if people don't do what they are told, they way they are told, people get hurt.

Nobody ever got hurt on my watch......

Hi Sheldon,

I, for one, do not consider you to be abrasive at all. I find your posts to be well written, to the point and easy to follow (despite the fact that they can be on the long side sometimes. That's not a criticism.)

Cheers!!

Thank you Dave. That is the technical nature of my personality, details are important. That bothers some folks and bores others.

I've looked at some of my  posts from years ago when I was using Photobucket Super Angry. If the photo link is DOA I'll update it with a new link to my Flickr albums. To me it is important to keep the photos attached to the threads. Nothing more frustrating than to see the little blank squares where an informative photo used to be.

Agreed, all my photos are still in place, here and on the tractor forum where I have a 12 year old technical thread that is still active.

Douglas, you do not understand, my social skills are not a natural talent or tendency, it is a learned skill that I had to work very hard at when I realized as a teen that is was going to be a necessary part of life.

And when you consider some of those on here who find me abrasive, you can see that I still am set in some ways that are a result of my introverted personality. Introverted people get only a small part of their self esteem from what others think of them, we are very internal, no matter how social of a public face we present.

My interest in the social side of the hobby has gone up and down. I have been a member of the NMRA since 1968, but have never felt the desire, or been willing to travel, to attend a convention.

I have belonged to clubs, but currently am not active in any. When my layout is to that point, I will invite some people I know for operating sessions.

I have no desire to invite people to help me build the layout, it is my creation.

I realize I'm oversimplifying, but even with the glitches, defects, and occasional disagreements...........this forum, imho, still has a lot of valuable information and a good number of members that are very helpful and offer good advice.

As far as photos.  I don't take photos, barely enough of my family even.  I have no model train photos.

Its my understanding we simply need an imgur account, which I may do if we get a different house and I start a new layout.

I look forward to that day, Douglas.  Yes

My main point is that people tend to have different devices to interact on the internet.  And they interact differently.

I've never had an issue with how this forum functions, so I don't understand how it can be the sole cause of other's disappointments.  I don't post photos, though.

Posting photos is the least of my problems. Disappointments?  How about frustrations?

1. The PM system hasn't worked in years.

2. I cannot access most of the forums, only this one and Classic Trains.

3. I have grown old waiting for the promised software update.

Rich

We're speaking the same language then.  We use the forum differently.

Never used PM.  Have had some come my way over the years, but not enough to notice the function doesn't work.

I have tried to access other forums besides this one.  Just not interested in the other stuff.  Maybe I'll try to lurk on the Trains forum.

I haven't noticed an issue with the forum as it is.  But my laptop is 10 years old so maybe it fits like a glove, LOL.

Kevin told me that his move to the other forum was deliberate and intentional, not just curiosity about other venues, and that he was making the new forum his "home". I don't reckon he'll be back soon. It's a loss here for sure.
