Kevin is fine, I correspond with him directly from time to time.
Both being freelance modelers, we have exchanged rolling stock, etc.
He moved on to another forum, I simply am spending less time on this kind of thing in total.
Not sure I understand the expectations some people have of others?
Straightforwardness and confidence were virtues when I was growing up, now they seem to be "incorrect"?

That's too bad. However, I can't say I blame him given the sporadic functioning that these forums have experienced recently.
I choose to take Kalmbach at their word when they say they are trying to fix things so I'm going to stick around.

Yeah, the forum is a shadow of its former self. It seems laughable now to think that new forum software is in the works. That ain't ever gonna happen. Meanwhile, so many veteran members have left the forum for greener pastures, so to speak. It is a rather sad situation.

It's the constant bombardment of ADs that drove me away for so long. It's "punishing" and totally cheapens the site and experience.
I do lurk because I owe people here so much for all the kindnesses and assistance they gave me over the years (and others) but if I wanted to be pummeled (ads) I'd play dodgeball !
Considering posting more here again after several years absent, but we'll see. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been driven away by this. If the ads were hobby oriented I'd be more ok with it.
Differences in opinions, "strong" debates drive some posters away but there may be other factors for people bailing...

I've done the same. I resisted for a long time, but finally the constant bombardment of pop-ups made posting itself impossible.
Now, oddly, I still get a few ads, but they're mostly for young women's underwear. Why, I don’t know, but I'm glad they tell me the illustrated size is usually small. If they were showing G scale, I might just give up.

Well, you'd have to ask Kevin why he is no longer here. I do think the photograph thing matters to some.
Let me say something that might be a bit controversial.
I don't have any complaints about the forum format, technology, or how it works or is run. Why? Apparently, the stuff that others complain about not working are features that I have never used in the 15 years I've been here. I guess you can't miss what you never use.
Posting photos, PMs, logging in/out, other stuff; just doesn't impact how I use the forum. Which is to read and post comments, that's it.
The ads? Well, I get them when I read the forum on my mobile device. But I never post anything to any forum or internet site using a mobile device. I guess I just don't live that way. I only use my 10 year old desktop with a 15 inch screen to interact on the internet. I've never ever have an ad problem.
Maybe the ad makers are only interested in attacking the faster paced minds that need to do stuff right this minute, rather than me who deliberately waits to sit in a comfortable desk chair and look at a big 15 inch screen? Maybe the "ancient forum software" works better on the tradional laptop and not the faster-paced mobile devices?
Seems like these problems could be a lifestyle choice issue, and not really a forum software issue?
None of this stuff is reason why I don't come here as often. The reason is strictly because of content.
For that matter, there are a lot of topics in all hobby forums that are simply too narrow, too specific, to capture my interest. If I don't have that specific problem, or product, or need for paint color, or that particular switch machine...etc. I pass right over the discussion.
I guess after being in the hobby for so long, I know what I like, and have honed my tastes and skills to satisfy these likes...and so much other stuff that's talked about is really not that interesting.
Kevin is over at another forum. He posts probably 1/8th the frequency he did here. I guess people change attitudes over time, adjusting or not, adding things to their lives or not; and other avenues fill needs better.

Speaking of changes to this forum, has anyone tried to update their password with the "new" system? Nothing works on changing or even viewing my profile, so I'm kind of hesitant. So far, I am still logged on. Fingers crossed.
I updated mine on the Kalmbach media site after getting a email and then the trains.com sites and no problems so far.

As Steve Otte said, the password reset for "trains.com" is not for the forum credentials.
Presumably we'll be prompted to change those (or sign in using them again) when the new forum package is ready (but we'll keep the current ones to access 'history' and old threads...)
What was written doesn't seem questionable or anything like that. Everyone's pointing out constructive ways to improve the forum. This place is great for helpful advice and interesting commentary on things.
For years now, my MR password has worked for the whole trains.com site, even though I wasn't technically logged into the entire major site. I could stil post everywhere. Today, I was prompted and did my update with PW, but was still required to re-log in here. I thought maybe the new PW would be required, but nope...only the old one suffices.
Agree with doughless above about the forum.
Things pretty much work "well enough" for me. Never got the posting errors that others have complained about. Perhaps that's because I'm on a Mac and not windowz.
I usually check each day around 10.15-10.30pm. I've noticed that sometimes the site is down around this time -- wait a while and it comes back up. Not a big deal.
Only complaint is that if the forum software crashes on a Friday night, it might not be "revived" until Monday...!

I'm on the forums every day, but I don't read most of the threads for precisely the same reasons that you don't. They just don't interest me. I'm perfectly happy to focus just on the threads that do.
I am a little disappointed that some major contributors have moved on, but that's the way life goes.
A few ads don't really bother me.
I welcome spirited discussion and don't expect people to necessarily agree with me. However, I don't care for threads that degenerate into name-calling or personal squabbles on any forum (it occurs everywhere, not just occasionally here).

Nope. My laptop has more problems with the forum software than does my smartphone.
Laptop? I can't use those things. Despite repeated attempts I have yet to master the mouse pad thingy. I did finally talk to my IT guy and he recommened an ad blocker that is safe and easy to manage. So the forum is ok now on the desk top. The tablet and the phone, not so much.
I have yet to master the smart phone for much of anything, its screen and keyboard are too small, my eyes and fingers do not like it.
For example, would not know how, or would get lost and frustrated, to start to go to photobucket and get a picture to post while writing a reply on the phone or tablet. Jumping from screen to screen that I cannot see is something my brain just does not want to do.
