Good morning diners.  I'm writing here in the daughter's living room while watching three grandkids run around.  I made their breakfasts, and they're having fun making lots of noise and climbing on the couch.  Fun! ... but I'm tired.

I'll be joining Bear in the back booth.

I'll be writing more when we get home next week.  I don't like writing posts on my phone.  Have a good day, everyone!

York1 John

I asked my doctor if I gave up delicious food and all alcohol, would I live longer?  He said, "No, but it will seem longer."

Gidday Chloe, I’ll be down in the back booth having a small dram of Ratu Fijian rum, and Dave, and others if they wish, are quite welcome to join me.

Paul, I only came across “Voices of Music” by accident when looking for Bach’s “Air on the G String.” I was listening to them while I was writing my previous rant, nothing like a bit of music to soothe the savage beast! It’s an understatement but they are a talented bunch.

Brent, I was driving out of the Yellow Cab base, Surrey Hills, Sydney, 1979, when Paul, an immigrant from Yugoslavia, and fellow night shift driver walked in waving a cassette saying, you have to listen to this Bear. It was the first time I’d listened to “Sultans of Swing”.

I’d better get off my high horse and go and sit quietly in the back booth.

May I join you? I totally agree with your position.

When I was the Training Manager for the Sears Canada store in Newmarket, Ontario, the federal government introduced the 'WHMIS' system (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System). It was a good system except for the fact that we didn't have many hazardous materials coming into the store. In fact, the only potentially hazardous material was 'White Out' typing correction fluid. In order for the White Out to create a hazard you would have to crush a whole case of the stuff in an enclosed space. So, ya, that could happen maybe in the back of a transport trailer parked at the receiving dock, but the forklift would have to run over the case repeatedly in order to crush all the bottles. In addition to that, the fact is that we never had the need to order more than a couple dozen bottles of White Out at a time. We would never order it in bulk! We spent hours putting all the staff through the mandatory training. It was a total waste of time and resources.

Note that I am not dismissing the WHMIS program. It was a valuable addition to workplace safety in many cases and no doubt saved some lives, but it was applied with far too broad a brush.

Cheers!!

Dave

Do you really not get it? People are laughing and mocking California because of the labeling, while in fact something that seems as harmless and natural as wood dust has caused cancer...    ... Unfortunately, too many people suffer when simple precautions can protect them, because of the same mocking attitude exhibited in these forums.

I’m pleased that you’ve replied because your inference in your original post was that I/we would be laughing because woodworkers have died of cancer exacerbated by the inhalation of wood dust.

In these days where it appears that people have the supposed right to be “Offended” by anything, I should be outraged that you would think I would find others deaths even vaguely amusing, but I can let that go.

Also, I personally do not mock California safety labelling, as I actually hold such “Safety Regimes” in contempt!

Contrary to current safety management practice, which involves lots of lip service and meaningless paperwork, bunging on an overabundance of safety labels, or donning a safety hat, dayglo vest, ear defenders and or a respirator are a total waste of time, if not preceded by a through, and on going education programme in practical safety!

“Is it unlikely for one person to suffer lead poisoning from occasional handling of a product? Of course. Is it so unlikely for someone who repairs those products, handling them day after day?
While your premise is correct, it is also irrelevant. All persons who deal with substances/situations which can be hazardous to one’s wellbeing should be educated in such matters regardless of the frequency of possible exposure.

I find after 40 years of working in an industry where mistakes often have a fatal outcome, either as union delegate, management, or running my own small outfit, that I’ve battled managements, and still battling a bureaucracy who don’t seem be able to grasp that having a good safety record, (unfortunately while perfection is constantly strived for it remains elusive) makes for satisfied customers which is generally good for the bottom line. Not to mention the safety of the workers.

I’d better get off my high horse and go and sit quietly in the back booth.
The Bear.

Hi Brent,

Dire Straits was my favourite band! Maybe because I was working in retail when I first started out. Thanks for the great video!

Good morning Diners.  A coffee on the go please, Flo.

Just a quick visit.   Dawn hasn't taken kindly to the temperature rise here.   Though she loved the 44 degree temperature  when we visited Dubai  and Doha?

Kevin.   Take care.  Some symptoms are mild.  Others are more dangerous.  When I got Covid I felt fine,  then the next I remember was Paramedics preparing me for a week of hospital food.

Try and call in later.

Stay Safe Everyone.

Kind of like the cancer warning labels, huh? Mischief At least don't walk quietly.  Put bells on the dogs or something.

Black bears never worried me, at my old house I would pull into the carport late at night and they would be sleeping in my carport. I would honk and flash the lights and they would go "whatever", I would just pull halfway into the carport, get out of the car and walk into the house and they never gave me the time of day. Grizzlies, however, get a lot of respect and I have seen many in the wild. Up at the ranch, we would carry a rifle out on the range up until mid-June when their bellies were finally full after hibernation, after that the guns would go back into the lockup until next spring. They would take down full-grown cattle in early spring. Black bears are scaredy cats especially when you have a dog or two along.

Kevin, hope you get over this quickly. Watch those SATs, if they fall below 90%, time to go to the hospital. Being vaccinated makes the world of difference as to how sick you may get. We have friends that are ER Docs and nurses and the only ones in trouble are those not vaccinated. Makes you shake your head.

With Monkeypox on the rise, it will be easy to tell who isn't vaccinated.Laugh There are a couple of other "plagues" showing up in the world that have come to the attention of health officials, I suspect the news departments will be mentioning them soon. Our local health officials are already aware of them.

Had a sushi feast tonight, one thing about living on the coast is it is really fresh. I ordered a big plate of octopus as Lions talk had me wanting to have it. Two thumbs up as it was really fresh, suction cups and all.

The Scotch went down well tonight, The wife and I are planning a Rocky Mountain trip for September exploring CPR history, life is perfect.

All the best to all.

Just like my area and "Winter Weather Advisories" in the winter time for 2 inches of snow... People stop paying attention when you cry wolf about a chihuahua.

Same thing happens here, and it does make you stop paying attention to it when small amounts like that are a regular occurance.

Almost forgot.  Got the appliances today.  I felt bad for the guys having to carry them into my basement.  It's not an easy path to get anything down, and my basement ceiling is really low.  I can stand up in most of it, but barely.  Have to duck under the main beam in the center, and to go out the door.  The guys that delivered the stuff today were both taller than me.  One guy could stand straight in parts of the basement, the other couldn't at all.  I thanked them profusely and gave them each a $20 for lunch.  They could have said they wouldn't/couldn't do it, and I wouldn't have blamed them.  I had a buddy lined up to help me carry them in just in case.

Well, here I am... I woke up this morning feeling like I was hit by a truck. Every muscle in my body aches, badly, and that is A LOT of muscle. Imagine a Giraffe with a sore throat.

I took a Covid test... POSITIVE.

This really sucks. 101 degree temperature, runny nose, and muscle aches. My blood oxygen level is at 94%. I have not been sick in forever.

I am double-immunized and boosted. This is terrible.

Kevin,

Get your back end in to be seen pronto.  There's a couple of oral treatments that significantly reduce the probabilities that it could get really nasty, but only if you begin them in the first five days.  Going through that in our house right now.  Plaxovid is the name of one of them [EDIT: Paxlovid].

Not a problem!  Don't run them in the state of California!

[/quote]

I've used similar, by saying "Glad I'm in Pennsylvania then!"

Pretty sure that literally everything causes cancer in California, including breathing in California air.

I have a theory as to why - For years, the Navy tested radioactive bombs off the coast of California, and all that radiation had to travel somewhere. Most times the current and wind direction carried all that "hot" water and air directly towards the coastline.

One such declassified test, my Grandfather was part of - Operation Wigwam. All the ships from that test were hauled, or sailed under their own power, back to Cali, "hot" ones even. And the contaminated water? Currents carried it right to the coast line....

You get the picture.

So, California sees all these items that "could" cause cancer, because California itself is dangerous.

As far as warning labels, and other warnings themselves - I feel that the above label is overused, therefore it loses most (if not all) of it's "warning" power. Other warnings that are not as frequently used tend to get more attention, simply because they are not on every product known to man...

Warnings and warning labels are a good thing, until they get too overused. (Like Ed mentioned with the back-up/movement beepers/flashers.) Once they get overused, they lose all their intended effect. Then, by that point, you might as well not even have the warning, as nobody cares about them anyways.

Just like my area and "Winter Weather Advisories" in the winter time for 2 inches of snow... People stop paying attention when you cry wolf about a chihuahua.

Rick J - Glad that the recvery is going well.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

Hi JaBear,

Thanks for posting 'Voices of Music'.

I had been trying to remember the musicians and this piece of music from way back. I recognised the Lute(?) player on the far right.

I know it's nothing to do with California (I cannot offer anything that members don't already know) but this music piece is one of my all time favourites. Paul

Food nutrition labels tell us if we are eating crap or not. A lot of money was spent bringing in that program. How many lives were saved and /or improved with the money that was spent bringing in that program and was it worth it?

Well, due to an operation I became a type 1 diabetic.  So after 60 years of eating whatever I darned well please, it became necessary for me to count carbohydrates so that I can dose myself with insulin properly.  Therefore to me and many of the other 37 million diabetics in America that label is worth the cost.

As a matter of fact, I think restaurants should also be required to post such information.  I hate eating out anyway, but nothing reduces the "enjoyment" further than having to guess the amount of carbohydrates to avoid over/under dosing.

I have no issues with these warning labels, the Governments spend a lot of money researching what may harm us. How people react to warnings such as weather warnings, disease warnings, and labels on cigarettes or booze is up to them, I see it as a gentle reminder. I like a wee bit of good scotch before dinner, I also know excessive amounts will do me in. People don't know what they don't know, all you can do is inform them and they choose how to proceed. Food nutrition labels tell us if we are eating crap or not. A lot of money was spent bringing in that program. Judging by the obesity epidemic not many read them so I guess it was a complete waste of money. You can lead a horse to water.

Time to get ready for Christmas!!

Last year I made a plum pudding for Christmas and it turned out okay but it certainly wasn't sensational. I used a recipe that I found online that dated from the 1800s.

This year I have a much better recipe thanks to one of our lifelong friends, Brenda. She brought some of her pudding to our New Years celebration last year so we were able to compare the two. To say that hers was better would be a vast understatement! My only saving grace was that my home made caramel sauce was to die for!

To give you an idea of just how fruity Brenda's pudding was, the recipe calls for 1 lb. each of raisins, currants, mixed candied peel, chopped red and green candied cherries and chopped dates. That's 5 lbs. of fruit with only 3 cups of flour! This has to be a healthy dessert!!Smile, Wink & GrinLaughLaughDinner

Of course there are other ingredients like 1/2 lb. margarine, 2 cups of brown sugar, 3 -4 tbsp of cocoa powder, 2 -3 tsp. of milk, and 2 tsp. each of cinnamon, cloves, allspice, vanilla and nutmeg. You will also need 3 eggs, 2 cups of water, 1 tsp. ginger and 1 tsp of baking soda. Chopped pecans or walnuts can be added too.

Boil the margarine, sugar, fruit and spices for 20 minutes. When the mixture is cool, mix 1 tsp. of baking soda with 2 or 3 tsp. of milk and add to the fruit mixture. Then add the eggs, flour. salt, vanilla and nuts, and mix.

Bake in a well greased pan (Brenda uses a bundt pan) at 300 degrees for 2 1/2 hours.

The recipe actually comes from Fogo Island in Newfoundland!

For those who might be interested, I will dig out my recipe for caramel sauce. I can only say two things about it. One is that you need to make tons of it because everyone will stand at the fridge spooning mouthfuls of it into their faces. The other thing is that this is one recipe that you cannot take your eyes off for a second, because if it burns, you will have the bitterest concoction that you have ever tasted!

Cheers!!

Dave

I spent about 3 hours today masking off the tiles in my beer nich to put down the siliconized grout in the spaces between the tiles.

I applied the grout, then carefully removed all the mask.

It looks OK, but it looks just like caulk. I should have just caulked it and saved myself a few hours.

Greetings all.  I shall pass on the octopussThumbs Down and take some nice grilled salmon!!Thumbs Up

Speakin' of airports, I worked at Horizon Air for 20 years here in PDX.  I spent my first three years in the freight department and saw far too many instances of bad / dangerous conduct on the ramp.  One of our agents, whom I considered a very poor hire, was protected by the freight department management despite several instances of damaged freight and vehicles.  Well, his luck ran out when he was goofing off on the ramp and backed a forklift into the props of one of our aircraft.  He destroyed both the prop and engine plus damaged the wing.  Management could no longer protect him and he was gone post haste.

After I was done with freight I went on and spent 17 years in safety and wrote up plenty of bad ramp behavior and was not very popular, but alas. . . . .

Y'all have a fine day out there and see ya on the flip side.Cowboy

Good morning from the beautiful West Coast.

I went to John Deere this morning to get a part they did not have the last time I was there. It would have been cheaper to have it mailed but I have not been out in ages and I love the quiet drive through the agricultural belt.

Water Level Route
Brent, in one way, I don't want to get back to being able to wear that suit.  Do you know how hard it is to find clothes I like that fit a 29 inch waist line?!  I'm a 31 now and it is much easier, although 32's are too big (belt or extra care required), so still a bit special to find stuff.  Not like 29s though.

I was 147lbs when I graduated and hit the gym, put 20lbs of muscle over the next couple of years, and 46 years later I am still the same. I still see my three best friends from childhood I grew up with and two of them are also just the same and one is just slightly overweight. All four of us are still very fit though.

There are toxins everywhere on this planet, and the amount of exposure to them usually determines the outcome. If you know a firefighter that has died from cancer through breathing in toxic fumes in burning buildings over a career but feels differently about a sawmill or woodworker that has had the same chemical exposure from sawdust and also died then nuff said. It all boils down to common sense as to what we let in our bodies.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring compound and will be found in water tables everywhere. Normally the low levels are not a problem but sometimes levels sneak up just a bit and agricultural areas can all of a sudden see animal reproduction plumet. It can make people unable to get pregnant as well, the first thing my wife tells people if they or their animals can't get pregnant is to check their water for arsenic levels. The point of this is, don't blow off warnings, it doesn't take much for toxins to affect your health.

When I worked I was on several accident review panels that involved moving vehicles. On the airport, of course, we had flashing lights/strobes that was a no-brainer, but we never had the beepers for backing up, though some vehicles were delivered with them. It was found drivers paid less attention to backing up when there was a beeper on their vehicle.

One of the biggest infractions airport safety officers patrolled for was parking brakes not set. The first infraction was a three-day suspension, 2nd 10 days, the third dismissal, no appeal. I saw more than one person lose their well-paid job over this.

Oktopuss I have had many times in different parts of the world, like anything else, who and how it is prepared makes all the difference. I generally like it though.

Bear, I also enjoyed Air on the G string.Yes

Coffee done, time to fix the Deere.

All the best to all.

Got all excited the other day as I thought I was first in line for a train, but it was short-lived.Laugh

I tried Chrome & Edge on PC (including clearing cache & cookies), and Safari on my phone.  None of the three worked with my original post.  As you can see, I could post something, but when I pasted in my original post (which I hit copy on before submitting), I was sent to the 403 error page.
